15 rounds, would Charles' skill allow him to hold up against Dempsey's punching ability? In terms of pure boxing skill, Charles was way better than anyone Dempsey ever fought except for maybe Tunney, who handily beat Jack twice. However, I think that Dempsey stands a very good chance of scoring a KO because of his hand speed and power in either hand.
Charles was better than anyone Dempsey beat and has the style, the tools and the pedigree to pull off the upset here. He won't be slugging it out with Dempsey like Firpo, and I don't think he'll be getting blasted out like Carpentier. The Gibbons fight (or Brennan, to some extent) will be the template here, except Charles can get over the line where they couldn't. Charles rides out some dangerous moments and wins on points.
Charles was kod by Walcott's left hook the hook was Dempsey's best punch:think I see Dempsey koing Charles mid fight. Was Charles a better boxer than Tommy Gibbons?
Charles for me. Dempsey struggled with lighter, technical fighters (Carpentier was simply God awful) I'd take Charles to one up Gibbons.
Which lighter technical fighters beat him? Charles was knocked down 8 times by Lloyd Marshall 7 times by Jimmy Bivins. Charles was beaten by Valdes ,Layne ,Johnson,Ray, yet he beats Dempsey?:think
I don't rate Dempsey. Nor his era really. And I already said; if Gibbons can cause Dempsey problems, Charles can beat him. Kinda' like saying 'Moore didn't drop Charles but he dropped Marciano so Charles would beat Marciano' which of course, didn't happen. And when Charles was dropped by Marshall he was still a pup. Moore was knocked out more at middleweight than he was at light heavy and heavyweight (in a reasonable timeframe anyway)
Jack seems to be too much of a media figure than a boxer. great power of course, but a pro like Charles has the edge on him.
So Charles was a better boxer than Gibbons? Yes or no will do. Charles was 22 years old with 32 fights under his belt when Marshall beat him.
I'm having a real problem trying to imagine what this fight would look like… or at least a way it could look wherein Dempsey wins. He is simply not going to outbox Charles, nor do I think he overwhelms him. Smaller, shiftier fighters were always the ones to give him trouble. That said, at heavyweight, Dempsey is a class above Charles. I think that counts for something. I'm still going with Charles eking out a decision unless Rickard and Co. have paid for James Daugherty to ref the affair.
Charles was advanced for the era, a modern heavyweight with experience and natural skill and power but even though the era had not produced the standards of Charles era as far as skill Dempsey was an incredible natural force and ATG at heavyweight....Charles could outbox Dempsey but JD always a danger with quick hands, savage power and meanness great match up
Dempsey was 22 years old with 43 fights under his belt when the Fireman KOed him in 1. But so what? Both Charles and Dempsey avenged these early road bumps in dominating fashion and moved on. I wouldn't use either fight to guage these guys at their best. Poor showings happen from time to time.
