A Hail Mary shot that Walcott couldn't replicate in their other three fights. Obviously if Dempsey lands his Sunday punch then Charles is going down, but he has to land it. He couldn't against Gibbons, who pretty well shut him down and was leading early on before fizzling out in the second half of the fight. I think Charles, superior to Gibbons IMO, can go one better and get the decision.
This is a difficult one to figure out. What impresses me most about Ezzard was the way he went the distance with Rocky in their first fight. He took everything the champ had to offer and survived. Still, I think Dempsey KOs him. Charles is very underrated.
Charles was better than anyone Dempsey faced but Dempsey was a great, Charles had a very good chin and anyone could get caught in fact Dempsey was Ko'd cold by Fireman Jim Flynn and dropped by Tunney who was a lighter puncher than Charles
I like Dempsey. It's a terrific match up but the best of Dempsey was very , very fast , a murderous two handed puncher and a nasty body puncher. The best Dempsey was too tough for Charles at heavyweight. I was rewatching the Carpentier fight and the body shots , the hooks and uppercuts were absolutely brutal.
Hard to say. Charles was certainly capable of outboxing Dempsey and winning a decision or maybe cutting up Dempsey with his slashing blows. On the other hand I don`t see Ezzard being able to take much at all from Dempsey if he can land square. Tough call I think Charles would have to fight a perfect fight to win if it was over 15 rounds. My $ says Dempsey catches him somewhere along the way and wins by Knockout. Jack may look like the loser afterwards though.
I would say yes, Charles was marginally better than Gibbons. I'd give Gibbons a better chance of beating Charles than Dempsey though.
To say Charles could beat Dempsey is not at all silly, but in a one-off, prime-for-prime match-up it is perhaps a little wishful. At his very best Dempsey's combination of speed and power, particularly his lengthy combinations, have a great chance of melting away all that was good in Charles. Furthermore I don't believe Jack faded as fights went on. He could ration in his dynamite and box aggressively in a controlled manner. Victory does not rest on a Hail Mary. An excellent fight. A Dempsey win.
How many of those guys would Dempsey even have agreed to share a ring with? That sounds harsher that it was meant, but there are some seriously good fighters in that list. I think Charles could take this.
Akin to asking how could Dempsey beat Charles when he lost to Tunney, Fireman Flynn, Willie Meehan and so on. Surely the idea is to match them at their best, not their worst.
I believe he was cut in the Gibbons fight. Later on Tunny opened him up. Those guys have similar punching styles as far as straight quick blows.
He wasnt cut in the Gibbons fight and Tunney almost closed his eyes, he didn't cut him.Point being Dempsey was rarely cut. I think the idea is to match them when prime?
He was cut against Gibbons. And he was cut against Tunney. There was blood streaming down his face against Tunney. According to ringside reports.
He was cut in the second round by a Gibbons left. So anyway as I stated before Charles could outbox him and MAYBE cut him up or bust him up. Dempsey was cut in two of the 5 or so fights that he was filmed in. Hardly qualifies as "rarely cut" Charles had the right style to do it.
