You should tell it like it really was. Jack Dempsey, the ref, scores 2 rounds for Layne, 1 for Charles and 7 even in the one fight Charles lost to Layne. In a blatantly obvious hometown decision, Referee Jack Dempsey scored 2 rounds for Layne, 1 round for Charles with 7 rounds even. Most objective observers felt Charles had won. During the fight Layne butted Charles repeatedly without caution from the referee. Legendary cornerman and trainer Ray Arcel said,"Instead of adding dignity to the fight game, Dempsey has added disgrace." Unofficial scorecards Ring Magazine - 5-5 Draw Salt Lake Tribune - 6-3-1 Charles Rocky Mountain News - 5-3-2 Charles There was nothing in the first Elmer Ray match (split decision) and Charles actually fought him weighing in at 175, light heavyweight. The AP scored it for Charles, 5-4-1. Less than 12 months later and still weighing 175 Charles ironed him clean out.
For sure .. Layne was a tough, strong bruiser of sorts .. by no means a great fighter but a top ten guy in his era .. I think even the faded Charles proved his superior .. Rocky clearly wrecked him ..
None too bright at all. Now, would you like to back the claim that Dempsey has a better heavy resume than Charles?
I am aware that there were issues surrounding these decisions, but they seem to have been controversial decisions, as opposed to robberies. If fighters like Ray and Layne could beat Charles, even arguably, then a number of people that Dempsey beat could do the same.
This is what I think to. I like Charles better as a technician and in a ATG sense, but at HW, against a prime Dempsey, I just don't think he last the distance.
Instead of being a last word freak read the thread .. my point is there .. BTW, yesterday was the 1st ..
Again, stack me up Dempsey's best pelts versus Charles' best pelts, both at heavyweight, and convince me that Dempsey's are superior. That is all I ask.
