In some ways I can understand the crowd here who feels Patterson can make a go of it. There are some ways in which he matches well against Dempsey. But I can’t go so far as to say he can capitalise on those strengths. Dempsey hit like Liston, was a good deal quicker, & at least as good a finisher. No doubt in my mind who wins, & how. With better durability, Patterson could make a decent fight out of it, but as it stands…
One thing that hasn't been mentioned here is that, despite his speed, Patterson was often a slow starter & was especially vulnerable to being dropped/hurt in the early rounds of a fight. I think the best Patterson can hope for here is to catch Dempsey coming in wildly & score a KD, but Dempsey should otherwise overpower/overwhelm him w/in 3.
Patterson was olympic champion as mw and lhw plus he was scared and had weak chin. Against Dempsey it would be his downfall. Patterson knocked only Ingo who had as bad chin as him, his power couldn't even bother Dempsey.
Patterson was the weakest hw champ, he lost a title against even weaker man Ingemar Johannson who had no chin. Patterson power wouldn't even bother Dempsey, and Patty would freeze when Mauler hits him same way when Liston hit him.
No vegan is beating up Jack Dempsey. Patterson won't be able to deal with Dempsey at close range, because that's where Dempsey will be. Patterson never showed great backpedaling and even if he tags Dempsey closing in, Jack will take it and give it back as he homes in. Would be a fun fight for the 5 minutes it lasts. It's interesting how Floyd fought more like Jack as he got older and stopped relying as much on the medium range peekaboo style. He was smothering Quarry against the ropes, mauling him and effectively depriving him of energy. Both Ellis and Quarry ended up looking more spent at the end of the fights than the significantly older Patterson did.
Just to add despite Patterson getting poleaxed by Liston twice he was still willing to fight Liston a 3rd time in the late 60s I believe.
Dempsey is probably too aggressive for Patterson but if Patterson survives the initial onslaught, he can win this fight. If you put a gun to my head or asked me to bet money I'd take Dempsey by early to mid-rounds KO, but I still can see a path to victory for Patterson, who again is painfully underrated on this forum. Plus Dempsey would not have the size advantage Ali and Liston had over Patterson. And Patterson would have a tremendous quickness advantage over Dempsey.
