In this clearer, colour footage you can really see how Dempsey didn`t know how to deal with Tunney`s jab:

    His foot speed had gone.

He mentioned having hip issues later in life from the Firpo fight, so I wonder if that was bothering him in these fights. Just sheer time out the ring too.

He was way better against Gibbons

Gibbons wasn`t moving like Tunney and wasn`t threatening with his jab the same, Tunney`s lead hand was held out nearer to Jack`s head than Tommy`s was.

Because his legs were too slow at this point. It doesn't mean that every fighter with decent jab would beat prime Dempsey, stop with this narrative...

I've always wondered, why did Dempsey allow Gene to walk him like that in the clinches? It made it impossible for him to land punches...all he did was land some shitty rabbit punches. Why? He doesn't contest them for strength, he just allows himself to be walked about like Old Tyson.

Was he just absolutely knackered from a very early point in the fight?

Dempsey was very adept with slipping punches. Here is legs were gone which did not provide him with his usual quickness to close the distance.

Gibbons didn`t threaten and flinch Dempsey with his lead hand they way Tunney did constantly.

I’d like to see evidence that Jack could cut off the ring against an opponent with decent footwork at any point in his career.

Follows Tunney around like a puppy dog. That’s not just ‘legs are shot,’ it’s poor tactical form.

Dempsey’s strategy was very different in fight two vs their initial encounter. Here he was trained to circle at arms length to force Tunney to reach. Then Dempsey was to counter. His opportunity arose in round seven as Tunney threw a jab and Dempsey countered with a right and drove Tunney to the ropes with a left right left with the final hook being a crushing blow to Genes chin.

Their first fight Dempsey came in with both guns blazing and several times early on it appeared Tunney was having trouble handling the aggression. As the fight wore on it became a one sided fight.

I think your last possibility is the most likely.
