It's not just the Smith fight that raises concerns for Johnson - in his younger years (what would be considered his physical prime), he had a bad habit of pulling straight back against taller/rangier opponents & getting caught on the end of their punches. The same mistake that cost him the Smith fight very nearly did the same for him in his 1st fight w/ Paul Andrews:

I think Johnson from around the time of the Doug Jones fight was actually an improved technician w/ tighter defense compared to his younger self, even if he'd lost a touch of speed in his legs:

Johnson was good at mid range jabbing and countering, Dempsey would be on him like butter on toast. He’s not holding up to Dempsey’s savage attacks.

Half you dipshits don't even know who Harold Johnson was. I got people obviously confusing him with Jack Johnson and John Henry Lewis.

Here is a list of the heavyweights that Harold Johnson beat and it's better than the list that Dempsey beat.

On the heavyweight level, Johnson beat:

    Ezzard Charles
    Archie Moore
    Bob Satterfield
    Nino Valdes
    Marty Marshall
    Wayne Bethea
    Eddie Machen
    Clarence Henry
    Jimmy Bivins
    Arturo Godoy

Sit down and take notes, son. You might learn something.
