Black US soldiers came back from Europe too (some stayed there !) and were subject to violence for being "uppity" enough to wear the uniform they had fought for the country in.
And that was all water under the bridge by 1934? (and actually 1892 was the year of the greatest number of lynchings of Blacks if we are going to use that barometer)... Again, not denying the wonders of racism (Kokomo, anyone?) during the era. But it's a convenient and cynical shield to raise, especially when papers were drawn up at least once for the contest
He tends to make a lot of those I've noticed. Especially re: Dempsey-Greb, etc. Judging but I've seen thus far, your sound reasoning will be ignored and disregarded.
No the REAL problem is lefties like you living in the PAST...I have tried to remain free of politics ,but you S cannot be reasoned with, so I bid you adieu....
Burt are you really someone to lecture others on "living in the past"? And I despise the modern Left, so don't lump me in with those fools. You brought up black racism. I only asked you to expand upon the topic you mentione.
S, I like you but sometimes you become so ambiguous that you leave me in a quandary...Let us stick to boxing as this forum implies...All I can say is the pendulum has swung so far today the other way, that it frustrates me no end... ciao...
When I say that Jack Dempsey's accomplishments pale to those of Joe Louis, it doesn't mean I feel that Dempsey was a bum. While Dempsey was a fine fighter, I can't understand how people can say that he was even as good as Louis, let alone better. It may be that Dempsey could beat Louis in a bout like Max Schmeling did, but it is folly to suggest that Dempsey and Schmeling can close to matching Louis as a fighter over an entire career. - Chuck Johnston
To compare Louis with Dempsey is a lesson in folly. They were two different fighters...Louis was the picture puncher along the style of an Alexis Arguello, patiently looking for an opening to close the show. Dempsey on the other hand reminded me in style and FURY of a Roberto Duran, snarl and all... When asked who would have won in a bout between Dempsey and Louis, Jack sharkey who fought both at different times in his career, opined "well if you put the two of them in a room and closed the door, it would be Dempsey who would walk out ". I feel the same way. But who truly knows ? But they were my two favorite heavyweights... Two dynamic punchers with two different styles..
