Honestly what the **** was Sharkey doing? You don't turn away to complain while someone is in the middle of attacking you in close, especially against someone like Dempsey.

I just dont think Sharkey ever really knew how to control his emotions in the ring. He was winning this fight but maybe the pressure was getting to him as he couldn't get Jack out of there so he was starting to crack at the seams calling out to the ref in the middle of the action. Just a thought.

I think Dempsey was taking over when it happened though. A lot of hard body shots, and Dempsey seemed to be getting into a better rhythm. Maybe he wanted out?

I never think complaining to the ref in general tends to be how winners act.

Sharkey was a somewhat unstable individual.

He would often break down and weep uncontrollably, for no apparent reason.

It might be as simple as him just having a blonde moment!

All this is why I've steadily maintained throughout the years that Gene Tunney would have whipped Jack Sharkey.

As above ,maybe a case of Sharks starting to feel the heat against Dempsey. Maybe his McCall moment where it just got to much and was looking for some kind of reprieve from Jacks body punching taking effect ?

You are probably right, but maybe, just maybe, if Sharkey got it all together that day?

Dempsey was losing the battle but winning the war.

Modern analogous fights to this are Ward vs Kovalev 2 and Froch vs Groves 1. This fight for me is vital video evidence in ratifying Dempsey's legacy after years of inactivity and cherry picking opponents. Dempsey was way behind, but his heart willed him onward. The last two rounds Dempsey is putting tremendous pressure on Sharkey, and is starting to land to the body. The last minute of round 6 Dempsey works Sharkey's body over, and after the round ends Sharkey cheap shots Jack. The maxim "Let sleeping dogs lie" is apropo here. Sharkey under Dempsey's withering pressure and taking increasing body punishment makes a classic mental fatigue mistake by turning his attention away from the most dangerous puncher of the first third of the 20th century.

Sharkey like Moorer was an excellent fighter, but had a bad habit of mentally tuning out mid fight, which is why neither were able to hold the title for long.

I think Sharkey was going to ground before the left landed if you look at his legs in slow motion he begins to bend. I think Jack was getting to him

I don't think that would ever happen. Tunney was better in every way than Sharkey.

That was probably Dempsey's best ever, most impressive punch, and is rightfully "up there" with all the other great left hook ko's of history. It told me that Dempsey was as dangerous as a rattlesnake,...at any time during a fight...all the way until the end of his career. That left hook that ko'ed Sharkey impresses me more than all those sledge hammer stuka bombs that he did Willard with.

Only problem I have with that is that winners can & should complain sometimes.
What about if you may LOSE because someone is getting away with punching you in the nuts?
Just heard that Bowe claims permanent problems downstairs due to Golota-would you be willing to have pain & a compromised sex life forever or try to stop it? If you resort to also cheating, maybe you get disqualified instead.
Or pulling you down by the head continually.

Or Foreman complaining to the referee to tell him to put a man's mouthpiece back in-a fighter who was being inevitably destroyed anyway.
Wanting to preserve your opponent's teeth by the ref following proper protocol is being a WINNER.
