Having watched a lot of Dempsey the past couple of months and seeing two Sharkey fights tonight, I was expecting a brawl between the two Jacks. I should mention that even though I don't expect everyone to agree with who I score a round for, it might be a little more questionable than usual in the case of this fight. The film quality was poor so I had a rough time tracking for the duration of the whole fight. But I tried my best to pay attention and still think I had a fair enough idea of the action to judge on the rounds. Rounds 1 & 2-From the very beginning it was apparent that this was a very purposeful scrap for Dempsey. He was not as relaxed as Sharkey and stalked him the entire time. It was also very purposeful for Dempsey in the sense that this fight would act as the decider to his potential return match with Gene Tunney. As to the rounds, both were neither slow nor entertaining. I had both even. Round 3-Dempsey was punching stronger in this round than the previous two. Near the end of the round Sharkey went down to one knee, in one of the corners. The referee ran in to protect Sharkey from getting hit. I thought it was a slip. What do you guys think? Slip, or knockdown? I gave the round to Dempsey. Rounds 4-5-Both were about like the first two rounds, and I had both even. Round 6-This round was the slowest, but I don't know why I felt like mentioning that Sharkey hit Dempsey after the bell as both of the boxers returned to their corners. He didn't look like he was trying to knock Dempsey out, he just looked frustrated. Even. Round 7-Don't take your eyes off this round. Sharkey did for one second, and WHAM! KO. Sharkey, for some reason looked to the left at the referee for just a second, and Dempsey snapped a left uppercut, sort of hook that dropped Sharkey to the mat. One note that I found consistent of the entire match was that although Dempsey was the constant aggressor, the fight was pretty much dead even. Oh, and also a comment on the slides that appear before nearly every round in this fight. Most are bull****. In fact, all but one were. Propaganda. Trying to make the readers think this was an exciting match. What crap. The slides seemed really pro-Dempsey. Also crap. Not that I don't like Dempsey, it's just that Dempsey wasn't giving Sharkey the lathering the slides made out like he was. Verdict: Though not a slow fight, it wasn't the brawl I expected and hoped for. Still, it was an interesting knockout, so I would suggest anyone watch it for its KO value. I went back to boxrec to see what it had to say about this fight and found loads of shitty comments on there: "); margin: 0px 0px 1rem; padding: 0px 0px 0px 3.5ex; color: rgb(33, 37, 41); font-family: Roboto, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);"> Sharkey dominated the early rounds. “I thought he was going to knock me out,” Dempsey admitted afterward. Bull****. Sharkey didn't dominate any rounds. Neither did Dempsey. Almost every round but the 7th was even. "); margin: 0px 0px 1rem; padding: 0px 0px 0px 3.5ex; color: rgb(33, 37, 41); font-family: Roboto, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);"> Broadcaster Graham McNamee told radio listeners that Dempsey was "groggy" and appeared to be "going" after a Sharkey barrage in the first, the third, and again in the sixth. More crap. Dempsey was never groggy. Neither one was. Neither man was ever hurt at all, until Dempsey knocked Sharkey out of course. "); margin: 0px 0px 1rem; padding: 0px 0px 0px 3.5ex; color: rgb(33, 37, 41); font-family: Roboto, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);"> James Dawson of the New York Times reported that Sharkey had "badly outboxed Dempsey," leaving the former champion to "flounder around the ring, flat-footed, bewildered, and staggering like a blind man finding his way." Lol. Sharkey did the furthest thing from boxing. The two spent the whole evening head to head going to the body. And that comment about Dempsey is absolute crap as well. Dempsey was not bewildered, he was the aggressor in the fight, and perhaps a little bit more effective than Sharkey was. "); margin: 0px 0px 1rem; padding: 0px 0px 0px 3.5ex; color: rgb(33, 37, 41); font-family: Roboto, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);"> Harvey Woodruff of the Chicago Tribune considered Dempsey "finished" in the fourth and a "gory sight." What can I say? What utter nonsense! All of the stupid propaganda that appears in the slides on the film and all of the info on boxrec disgusts me. I love boxrec, but this is ridiculous. It was all a bunch of propaganda to make it sound like Dempsey was in the fight of his life, it was do or die. If he didn't beat Sharkey, he didn't fight Tunney, and his career was effectively over. That's all true. But they made it sound like Dempsey came back from an inevitable loss at the hands of a young menace who almost knocked him out, and Dempsey triumphed with an out-of-nowhere single KO punch that snatched victory from certain defeat. The real fight as it appears on film is not half as glorious as all that.
Okay, interesting to know. I haven`t seen the fight till now. I just read, that Sharkey dominated the rounds and Dempsey won, cause of a controversial knockout (some ringsiders has seen an illegal low blow by Dempsey, before the knockout). Though I don`t know, perhaps it was different. Maybe, I will watch the fight soon.
The problem I have with the end, is that I can't think of any objections had the ref waiver the fight off and gave it to Sharkey.
I didn’t think it was low blow at all at the end. Still don’t know what people see lol. If someone can actually freeze frame a shot to the lower regions please do because I’ve yet to see it. Unless Sharkey is a mutant with his testicles attached to his belly button. Ps I thought Sharkey was dominating the fight till the Ko. But it’s been awhile since I watched in its entirety. Just a different take.
Hmmm, by that video I don't think Dempsey hit Sharkey low and I don't even think he hit him very hard.
Good lord what a pathetic recap. Even fight? No low blows? Sharkey might have been knocked down? Sharkey hit Dempsey after the bell? Lol. Dempsey apologist much? Dempsey may have won one round in this fight, fouled Sharkey throughout, and Sharkey hitting Dempsey after the bell was in answer to Dempsey hitting him after the bell first. Dempsey landed not one but numerous low blows before Sharkey appealed to the ref. Ill give you the benefit of the doubt snd assume the copy you were watching was so god awful you have no idea what you were looking at.
This was the one: This content is protected Not meant as disrespect, but have you watched it recently? I took notes on the fight and wrote this right after I watched it, last night. As to if Sharkey was knocked down, or Sharkey hitting Dempsey after the bell, I have no thoughts on those things, and was merely asking other people what they thought about it.
Yes, Ive seen it multiple times, most recently a few months ago when I scanned the complete 45 minute theatrical film to HD. Its very easy to see the numerous fouls Dempsey lands just preceding Sharkey complaining to the ref. He lands a low blow, followed by ramming his shoulder into Sharkey's face, a low blow followed up an uppercut, then lands five low blows in a row and a left hook as Sharkey complains to the ref. As for the late hit, you can see as Dempsey relaxes and begins to head to his corner he hits Sharkey on the chin with a light cheap shot right hand on the opposite side of the camera to which Sharkey answers back. The theatrical version goes into slow motion to show this sequence. When Sharkey goes down you can clearly see his back leg slips on a puddle of water in his own corner without being hit. The ref was correct to step in and protect him.
I think, now I remember. I read, that Sharkey wanted to complain about a low blow, let his guard down and then Dempsey knocked him out. You can watch it in slow motion (start about 23:50). Maybe around 23:54 you can see the low blow. Well, Dempsey took his chance very quickly.
You can see his legs buckling as he turns to the ref before Dempsey land the punch to the jaw. I think they are clearly below his belt, atleast some were probably more on the bladder, but that is still a really painful foul blow. The colorised version is maybe even more clear to see This content is protected
I second Klompton2 on this one. You watched a very unclear version. I recommend you watch the colorized version on you tube narrated by Marty Glickman. It only contains rounds 1, 3, 6, and 7, but one can see clearly what happened. Might not be up to the best version such as Klompton has seen, but is a big improvement over what you watched and posted. The first round was no where near even. It might have been until Sharkey hits Dempsey with two hard left hooks and then drives him to the ropes with a series of punches. Dempsey's knees buckled, but he took it well and soon went back to pressing forward. Sharkey going down in the third round was a slip. The water in the corner is obvious. I think Sharkey clearly won rounds 1, 3, and 6, and watching the other rounds on the poor tape, he was well ahead and I would score all of the first six rounds for him. What stands out is how rarely Dempsey hit Sharkey to the head. The only good head punch I noticed from him prior to the 7th was a left hook in the 3rd. Dempsey concentrated entirely on hitting Sharkey to the body. These punches didn't seem to be having all that much impact on Sharkey, as far as I could tell. Sharkey on the other hand really teed off on Dempsey with left hooks and right uppercuts. Dempsey took it all though and kept coming forward. Sharkey physically looks like he should have been a big puncher, but he only scored 13 KO's in 55 fights. Off what I see here, I question his punching power. As with the Firpo fight, Dempsey showed chin and also heart and stamina. He ate a lot of punches but kept coming. I think it obvious that Dempsey hit Sharkey low in the 7th. The first two of the final three rights hands were somewhat below the belt. The last right hand body punch, somewhat obscured, was lower than the first two and Sharkey clearly reacts. He foolishly turned his head away from Dempsey. Dempsey was top of the line at knowing where the ref was and fouling when the ref was not in position to see. That is a basic skill needed to be an effective dirty fighter. You mentioned Carpentier claiming fouls. Sharkey had won three fights on fouls prior to this fight, one of which saved a victory over Mahoney after Mahoney had put Sharkey down six times in the preceding two rounds. He was trying again here. He was hit low but it is impossible to say how much of the rest of it was pure ham. Overall, a fun fight to watch and Dempsey's most impressive performance. As they say, it ain't cheating if you don't get caught, and Dempsey pulled it off with panache.
Another pretty clear version, I have found on dailymotion (with some explanations at the end). Not sure, if I can link dailymotion here. Well, I can try it out now.
