Dempsey pounds on Toney like Rocky Balboa hits meat hanging in the freezer. Its over before six rounds, and I say this because Toney had a good chin.

No way Toney exchanges here. While Toney is a skilled counter puncher its hard to counter speed even if the technique is off, and when you miss on a coutner....

It would be a mistake to underestimate the 'technical' skills of dempsey. Read and learn about the "Dempsey Triples", and learn those moves. Walk into any gym in this world and throw those moves into a heavy bag and you'll catch every eye in the place.

Gibbons certainly doesn't box nearly aswell on the backfoot as Toney and is very 1 handed, left hook based making him a bad style to face Dempsey. Toney is very comfortable on the back foot and has that right hand counter that gave Dempsey fits.

While more consistent than Toney, Gibbons has little pedigree against top level 190lb+ men, where as Toney does

And as for comparing Dempsey's speed to Jones  Come on Toney has faced plenty of quicker guys than Dempsey who didn't even use a jab

I would expect Dempsey to win this fight inside the distance, I think he would wreck Toney, and I can't be bothered to go into detail as to why.

Toney (as a HW) is one of those fighters who gets a disproportionate amount of love on ESB, and I really can't work out why...

Gibbons doesn't display a lot of back foot boxing because he has great moving footwork and surprisingly cute upper body movement. Furthermore, I see Gibbons as being fairly balanced in the scant available film. He is throwing lead rights against Dempsey when he gets space and works the right well behind the jab both to the head and body against other opponents. Again, the filmed evidence is scant and all toward the end of his career. I will look back at some articles to see if there is more description when I have the time. But to your point, no, he is not an exact corollary to Toney who likes to sit in the pocket but I contend he is an equally skillful boxer, and just as difficult a puzzle to figure.

Check out this bit of film.

Regarding Dempsey's speed, those who witnessed him live contended he was as fast as any lightweight of the day. I have to give some credence to this as film from this time can be very unreliable.

Seeing these two names with a "vs." between them is shocking at first glance...at second glance depressing.

    Seamus,

You always write off Marciano's victory over Ezzard Charles, because Charles was "32", yet when it comes to Gibbons, you give Dempsey full credit for the victory. Wasn't Gibbons "age 32" when he fought Dempsey?

I was merely using Gibbons as a correlative to Toney to demonstrate Dempsey versus an elite boxer type. Truth be told, Dempsey apparently fought a dirty as hell fight and had the help of his "house ref" Daugherty in this one. Jack would have won either way but Tommy sure was pissed about how it went down.

I give Marciano a modicum of credit. However, Charles went something like 9-14 after the second Marciano fight. He was toast. Gibbons went 12-1 after the Dempsey affair, only losing in his final fight to Tunney.

Crusierweight/in shape heavyweight James Toney beats Jack Dempsey. Jack Dempsey beats fat heavyweight James Toney.

Dempsey beats (HW & LHW) Toney, most likely by KO. Prime Toney was middle & super-middle.
