Dempsey by ko inside 5rds. Better puncher ,and with both hands ,better mover, quicker starter, more durable, spells early night for Joe. In the words of the late Jim Reeves ."That's what happens ,when two worlds collide".
I think this all depends if Joe can take Jack's punches early. I dont think it is in doubt that Dempsey was the faster starter and definately had a better right hand but a peak Frazier (circa 71) was a very well conditioned and determined fighter. I also think that Frazier would prove to be the stronger man. If this has any bearing on the outcome I dont know. I suspect that Jack on his best day finishes this, probably early but it is a hell of a matchup.
Dempsey fought tons of guys stronger than him, that's why they called him the Giant Killer, but they all ended up the same way.
This is true, big guys who no doubt had alot of brute strength, but I cant think of a Dempsey opponent who had the stocky, powerhouse build of Frazier. The deciding factor in this matchup for me is Joe's slow starting. If you could teleport him into the bout fully warmed up and smoking, Jack may struggle to time him and keep him away. Alot as well comes down to punching power. To my mind Demspey is the better puncher but although Frazier isnt a top puncher in the pure sense he still has a good dig on him and throws in volume. If they were around at the same time they would obviously be aware of each others strong points, and I think Dempsey would go all out early and get the finish, not giving Frazier the chance to get into it.
Good responses. I'm excited to hear more insight. More responses Classic! I'm waiting for some of the other posters to talk about it (I haven't seen this H2H thread since I've been at ESB I think). Anyway... off to bed. Really wonder who McGrain picks here.
well i would put my money on joe frazier. i think in terms of heart and stamina and tougness and speed they are about the same. dempsey has a better right hand then joe but that's about it overall i think joe had the better boxing skills. though the fight could go either way if i have to make a bad on it it would be on joe
Watched Frazier vs Ron Stander the other day and theres a moment in the first round when Frazier is momentarily staggered by a seemingly relatively innocuous punch (think he may have been a little off balance too but it definately got his attention) - but it got me thinking about one of the funny things i've always thought about with Frazier - for all his vaunted chomping-at-the-bit toughness sometimes when he did get hit by something that did hurt (even just a little) he was one of those fighters that made it really obvious that he'd been hurt a little ( i mean it was obvious to everyone and at ringside and Stander also realised a soon as he'd done it aswell) - you know how some fighters don't show it as much or can disguise it quite well at least - but with Frazier his legs could really disobey him at times and he would go a bit rooted to the spot and be desperately bobbing up and down almost blindly in an attempt to not get hit by anything else - happened a few times with Ali too and Bonevena and even Ellis and also early with Foreman before any of the knockdows - really obvious when something had registered and I think this would be where his problem might lie with Dempsey because i think Dempsey was one of the fastest to react to even the slightest sign that you might be hurt (whereas say with some like Stander, or Ali for that matter, they didn't get on him in a flash) and I think Dempsey would be merciless as soon as he saw even a stutter in Frazier and would be lashing out on him a la Willard - coupled with this it did seem as though it was always early that Frazier would be wobbled - through his career he did get dropped a total of 10 times by the 2nd round - obviously the 6 by Foreman, but also 3 times by Bonevena and once by the unheralded MIke Bruce (all in the first couple of rounds) and Dempsey, during probably his prime year of 1918, went 20-1 with 17 KO (but most worryingly for Joe 12 in the first round - bad match up for poor Joe i think this one - think Dempsey would have upmost respect for Joe as a fighter (probably some fear) and i think it was actually when Dempsey was worried about the danger an opponent presented that that was actually when the opponent was in most peril (a la Willard and Firpo) because that was when he went into kill-or-be-killed mode.
I think Joe's grit sees him through a tough first two rounds to stop Dempsey late. Joe possibly hits the canvas repeatedly, but does not stay down. His superior boxing ability, pressure and willingness to eat the occasional bomb and not be discouraged wins the day.
I dont think Joe had superior boxing skill, very much a left handed fighter who comes forward and bobs up and down. I think Dempsey has the superior skill and definately speed of foot. They are without doubt both hard *******s but its my gut feeling that Jack is the more deadly. im sticking with manassa mauler.
Of course he's not more durable. I think I do agree with McVey's pick though. Dempsey is a fast starter and a better boxer with better footwork. I personallly don't think that Demspey will blow Frazier out in the first five, I think Frazier survives, but hurt. The middle rounds with Frazier trying to establish himself in the fight despite having been hurt and probably down with Dempsey torn between boxing and making another move for the finish would be fascinating viewing I bet. Frazier wins the argument and starts to impose himself but too late, and despite some difficult moments down the stretch Dempsey survives for a close points win.
Dempseys power gets overrated, he needed 100s of shots to put away the likes of Firpo/Willard and the fact they were as slow as sloth allowed him to throw so much without taking much back. Fraziers faster better hands (than those 2) see Dempsey get hit far more and doesnt let him get into the same rythm Fraziers chin is allot better than given credit for, he took masses of punnishment from Foreman who is much more powerful and stronger. Frazier also has very underrated power, speed and accuracy. Frazier is the stronger stockier man of the 2 and the better workrate down the stretch In terms of style both men like to come forward and lead with left hooks and this would likely mean its going to boil down to left hook exchanges and a battle of left hooks in a brawl. Fraziers left hook is the better for me and he has so much variety with it. Dempsey would start faster, probably hurt Joe early but once Joe gets smoking he'll take over and start to break Dempsey down with his intensity, body attack and greater strength Frazier KO8
