I don't know..... I like the tale of Jack Dempsey and I have the '83 Bio-Film that starred Treat Williams, as well....... All kool stuff........ However, I think Dempsey is a tad overrated......... But that's okay......... From 1887 to say 1960, I'd certainly rank Dempsey high up there in the top-5 of ATG heavyweight champions, but his number dips down when I mix in the post 1960 champs leading here to 2010........ Dempsey's size and style at heavyweight is not without its share of flaws..... The history books are kind to Jack Dempsey after all the years that have passed, but I am confident I can pick 10 champs either past or current here in 2010 that would probably eliminate him from my top-10 ATG rankings........ These days, Jack Dempsey probably fits into my top-12 list........... Cheers...

    Note:

Jack Dempsey's legendary status as a fighter / champion in unexcelled for the most part.... He is a notable character who is greatly admired in the world of boxing / sports....... Only a handful of athletes receive his credit and praise, etc............... HOWEVER! "Legendary Status" and "Notable Fame" doesn't always win fights......... Whether some of the recent and more modern heavyweight champs are either colorless or unmarketable, doesn't mean they couldn't beat Jack Dempsey in the ring via a time machine.......

I also doubt that guys like "Dempsey and Marciano" would be 210 to 218 pound heavyweights if they trained like the modern boys do today........ Many of the current heavyweights are up their in weight cuz they eat like horses and prefer to have 8 to 12 % body fat instead of the respectable LESS than 5 % body fat content of yesterday........

People today are pretty ignorant when it comes to Gibbons ... the best comparison I can make is abetter Jams Toney ... he was a terrific fighter. I agree with Janitor but something just tells me that Rocky would land a huge one that would really hurt ... again, this is on I would never bet but love to see ..

I agree with Janitor, Dempsey was a harder puncher than Bonavena and Quarry and had better finishing ability

How long did Dempsey's prime last? A couple rounds, a few months? Is too much being read into his late stage title run and the Willard fight? Did the Miske, Brennan, Firpo, Gibbons or Carpentier defenses actually impress anyone? The older I get, the more I am just not sure of how good he was. That bob and weave and fancy footwork looks good on film, but he sure did get hit a lot for all the trouble.

I take Frazier. There's more prime to judge him by and I am more sure of his ability.... at least against smaller heavyweights like Dempsey.

Gibbons better than Toney? Based on what?? Gibbons was slick for his day, but he had little power at 180 + and was even LESS of a true heavyweight than James Toney........ I see a well tuned Toney schooling Gibbons all about the ring in boring but convincing fashion via time machine........

My Jets won, so I'm happy there........... GO JETS!

I just did "Shavers-Sims" from the Bahamas.... Shavers decked in round 1, but roars back to halt Jeff Sims in round 5...... Sims out on his feet.........

I now have "Quarry-M. Foster" rolling...........

I'd say it lasted longer than Frazier's, who was washed up at 29, according to his fans.
Did the Stander ,Daniels defences actually impress anyone?

Dempsey defended against 'Billy Miske' and 'Bill Brennan' in 1920-circa........... WOW!! I am over ****ing whelmed by this amazing sequence of events........ According to Wikipedia, Miske was over-the-hill and Brennan was ahead on points after 10 rds before Demps lowered the boom late......

NEXT! Joseph Frazier was not shot at age 29, but rather age 31 after Manila..... Still, like I have said before, I think the 224 pound Frazier of 1976 could still beat a string of "B" type fighters to make money and pad his record a bit more........... The fight with George Foreman in New York was simply for good / quick income........

Thomas Gibbons was a good / great boxer.......... BUT!!! That was between 167 to 177 pounds................... Gibbs was NOT a solid heavyweight........ The fight with J.D. in Montana was a flop that left the town of Shelby broke.........

I'm ending this---FOR NOW!!! Frazier hands Dempsey back his head after knocking it off with a wicked series of left-hooks...........

After losing to Dempsey in sept 1920,Miske had 6 fights in 1921,winning them ALL.
In 1922 Miske had 15 fights, losing only 1 a dec to Gibbons.
Miske's last year of fighting 1923 saw him in 2 bouts ,he won both, one was a 4rd ko over Brennan.
Included in his victims were contenders
    Renault
    Roper
    Gibbons
    Weinert
    Smith
A 1 rd ko over Fulton and a ko over Meehan in 4rds.
So in 2 1/2 years Miske has 23 fights losing only one a dec to Gibbons ,who he also beat, not too bad for a man over the hill.

Laughing is good for you. I can probably give you another laugh: The Sharkey who lost to a declining Dempsey would also have beaten Quarry and Bonavena...in my opinion. :D

Sharkey was very underated and he also beat a slew of top fighters both the black and white fighters that were avoided. Sharkey did fight anyone and had his share of solid victory's
