In one corner you have the main man in the division during the roaring 20’s against the best fighter in the division during the 30’s and 40’s. Two dominant forces colliding with only one outcome guaranteed – there won’t be any need for the judges tonight. The tale of the tape indicates a very evenly balanced set of boxers. Louis is 1 inch taller, has 3 inches in reach and about 6 lbs in weight very marginal benefits. In terms of power both hit very hard and could easily knock the other out, both are very fast with their hands, Jack has the stronger chin, stamina, heart and ring IQ favour Joe but not by a lot. The build up for the fight got a bit spicy with Louis claiming Dempsey avoided the best black boxers during his time and that Jack was scared of what he was going to do to him in the ring. This riled up the Manassa Mauler who claimed he was scared of no man and never intentionally avoided anyone, his job was to fight whoever they put in front of him. A raucous crowd are in the arena tonight expecting fireworks from the first bell. The crowd are very much split down the middle with both fighters having large contingencies of fans passionately cheering them on. Once in the ring neither man takes their eyes off the other, Louis is pacing back and forth while Dempsey stares ahead. Both giving each other death stares. The bell sounds and these two lions are finally unleashed. Dempsey comes charging forward and starts throwing all manner of fast hard shots overwhelming Joe and forcing him to tie up. In between blocking the shots the odd one slipped through and Louis clearly felt the power and ferocity that Jack has. Once separated Louis starts throwing some beautiful combinations and Dempsey is momentarily stunned. As the round progresses Louis is noticing Jack’s lack of technical boxing skills and starts to establish his jab and his fast hands to beat Dempsey to the punch. Round one goes to Louis. Round two and again Joe is taking a slightly more measured approach using his jab and nullifying Jack’s attacks. Dempsey is still having some successes landing some hurtful shots but just not enough to truly worry Joe. The Brown Bomber is already sensing the frustration of his opponent and immediately ups the pace throwing some blistering 3 and 4 punch combinations that are starting to have an effect. Round 3 and Dempsey is now fully aware of the gap in skills between the two. Under normal circumstances that wouldn’t be too much of an issue because Jack has two great equalisers his speed and dynamite in both fists. However on this night he just happens to face a guy who’s just as fast and hits just as hard. Dempsey has to get in striking distance to actually land some meaningful shots the problem he’s having is to get in this position would mean entering Louis’s optimal range for his attacks. During the mid point of this round Louis has completely taken over the fight and actually knocks Jack down with 30 seconds to go. He manages to rise but the next two rounds consist of Louis using is incredible speed, reflexes and power to dismantle Dempsey. After another knockdown in round six the fight is waved off with Jack completely out on his feet. Verdict – TKO win to Louis round 6
A very plausible scenario, I'd make Louis the favorite here as you mentioned his boxing ability was superb. Dempsey has an opportunity early as Joe was never a fast starter despite the rematch with Schmelling. He could get to Joe early with a fast attack. I'd make this a 60/40 fight for Louis as his abilities speak for themselves, but if I had a big bet on this I wouldn't be comfortable.
I agree Dempsey can finish anyone if he connects clean but on balance I would have to favour Louis in a fast and ferocious fight
I'd favor Louis, yet if Dempsey won in a dominant fashion I also wouldn't be surprised. Jack has no reason to be morbid going into this fight -- though somber reasons might develop as the fight proceeds. Louis needs to be more prudent than cautious. If Jack shows the in-out tantalizing of the start of the Willard fight, Louis needs to show patience, but also realize that if he waits out Jack's move into his range they're both going to take rough stuff -- and if Jack gets over first Joe will facing a dam-burst. I do think that, as Joe gets experience of Jack, he'll pick up things, evasive things, ways Jack tries to throw a wrench into Joe's engine. I think time is on Louis's side. If there's time -- by no means a given. Dempsey needs more Willard-form than Firpo-form. Will need bob&WEAVE . Three fights, would expect Louis 2 - Dempsey 1. Two fights: 20% Dempsey 2, 40% 1-1, 40% Louis 2. Should also say that Louis also might win in commanding manner.
Two favorites of mine. First off IMO I think Jack is a much better technician than given credit for. He just applies it to his style of fighting so it's not as obvious as Joe's because Joe employs a more classical style. That being said Styles make fights and I favor Jack here. If anyone is going out early it's Louis. If the fight goes to the cards then I favor Louis slightly.
Yup I used to favor Louis in this, but now I think Dempsey gets to him at least in a one-off. Dempsey imo was even faster than Louis, and coupled in with his aggression and superior power, I think Louis will be caught off guard and taken out. Louis has never faced anyone faster than him, so he'll be caught quite off guard imo.
For Dempsey to get close enough he would have to eat some brutal combinations from Louis, would his chin hold up long enough to hurt Joe I don't think so also there's a big gap in boxing skills between the two
Probably Louis. I just get the idea that Louis would create a carefully prepared killing field, and back up just enough to Keep Dempsey walking into his punches. Blink and you could miss me being proven wrong though!
I agree in terms of size but Louis is more skilled which I think would be the deciding factor in an action packed fight
