I would take Jack Dempsey in this matchup. Faster hands, better footwork, more evasive speed... Joe Louis would be a tough fight, I'm not saying I believe it'd be easy, but I think Dempsey is a better fighter.
seems like a 50/50 :think finally we got a good debate going don't see much of these on esb mostly its always one sided :bart
This is a tough one. Joe Louis is regarded as the 1 or 2 GOAT by many today. However, in the 60's there was a poll done by sportswriters, many of whom saw both of these guys fight, and Jack Dempsey winning with 251 votes, and Joe Louis getting only 109. Dempsey was regarded by many to be the greatest heavyweight that ever lived and many who lived into the 1980's that witness all the great heavyweights have said that Jack is the best HW they have ever seen.
true but if you think about it Dempsey was a really wild brawler and if he would try to fight that way against Louis the same way he did against Willard he could get caught
Joe more skilled, Jack more animal, if Joe survives first three rounds he wins easily, this would be one of heavens greatest matchups can yo imagine any fight that would engender more excitement?
I can't agree with that... Jack was far more than a brawler. He was a ferocious fighter with boxing ability. Bob and weave style fighters often get the stigma of a "brawler" but I don't think Jack was anything but that. If you are insinuating that he was wild against Willard I have to disagree. He fought a perfect fight against Willard and I think most would agree with that.
...when joe louis was champion this was the most common fantasy fight. a great match up of styles....joe with his stand up left jab that he could turn into a hook while on its way to the target and his right hand and his super-fast combinations - - dempsey with his bob and weave and his own power, especially his left hook. tunney said he was very hard to hit with his straight right. i've always leaned toward louis, but i think it's perhaps the best "who would have won" match of them all.
