Chris, Luther McCarthy was a big puncher. Without a doubt. In a way Dempsey was lucky he died young, because he was highly touted to be the next dominating force upon Johnson's retirement. Some of those others were gooftroopers, but McCarthy was legit.
The shots he took from Dempsey, time and again without the rest of an eight count, were enough to seriously kill a man .. the fact that he kept getting up is amazing ... Lennox Lewis got hit with one like that against McCall and Rachman and Lewis and was done for the night ... Wlad Klitschko would crap in his pants ... Willard was a tough S.O.B.
Bum. Bum. Not a puncher at a 40% KO percentage, and he lost the fight. Lost every time he stepped up. Journeyman.
Yeah, just keep believing that Pelky, McNobody, a 30% KO guy and a 50/50 journeyman are dangerous hitters. Oh yeah i forgot that Morris beat Hart in his very last pro fight, a real legacy defining fight that one!
I liked Kenny, but he would never have survived 3 rounds with Jack Dempsey...in my opinion. That's just how it is.
OK, so everybody who lived at the time thought that these guys were contenders and dangerous hitters, but you know better because you have looked over their records on boxrec. The truth is that some of these guys were probably better than Firpo, who you singled out as one of the two elite level punchers that Willarrd faced.
Not sure about the first round (although very possible). I would expect Dempsey to stop him within 3-5
