I'm not sure Fulton was more highly regarded ... Wills was dominating the best black heavyweights, even though they were getting long in the tooth as well as anyone else that would fight him ... who was Fulron dominating ?
Nc, respectfully that is a lot of B.S. implying that all those writers in the early 1950s who chose Dempsey, because they were biased in favor of fighters of their youth...To make such a ludicrous statement, based on your own BIAS is astounding... Those same writers extolled Willie Pep, Ray robinson, Ezzard Charles, Archie Moore, Ike williams to the skies, they absolutey revered Joe Louis, but YOU to bolster your disike of Jack Dempsey's place in history, spout that these PROFESIONAL writers ,ALL of them to a man ,weren't saying what they fervently believed...NONSENSE... Many of them raved about the fighters of that time of Marciano's reign, and they are more to believed than you,60 years later...To know about the past we read from historians who were THERE, and when they to a man observed that Dempsey would have kod Marciano, that was there PROFESSIONAL opinion...
You keep regurgitating this myth but Wills had dominated Langford numerous times at this stage Why was Fulton happy to get in the ring with Langford but not the man who was dominating Langford?
PP,incorrect PP. When Marciano fought these guys, except for Rex Layne, the other guys were almost on social Security, and past thei primes and the sportswriters were more or less split in their picks...But these same sportswriters picked Dempsey to a man to beat the slower Marciano in a Fantasy fight...To a man...And these same sportswriters loved Rocky as a gentleman as did I...He was an idol to me those days, but I SAW his limitations against a Dempsey or my man Joe Louis who hit just as hard and twice as fast.. P.S. I once saw Rex Layne fight Bob Baker, and wasn't too impressed with Layne, whom a Jerry Quarry would have taken apart for what it's worth...Cheers...
From what I've read allot of people picked Walcott to beat Rocky and I think allot picked Charles to win back the title. Layne too, Moore....maybe not I'm not so sure....but that's boxing allot of journos can't pick em :good Haven't seen that fight, ever watch Rocky live? I'd pick over Dempsey and make him even money against Louis, maybe Louis winning a rematch though
You're obviously unaware every white contender and champion flat out turned down, the best black contender around Harry Wills? Langford was well past his best Which is why you're seen as a troll
Since Walcott and Charles are top15 HWs near their best, 1 the champ at his best ever according to himself after being able to finally feed himself properly and the other who should by all accounts have regained his title But you're a troll so you don't care
Because I didn't know who he was Have you watched 1 of his fights yet. Hey Pernell trained Judah, he must be the greatest boxer of all times too eh captain ****wit :nut
Not quite G I. They favor anyone not named Jack Dempsey...Dempsey against a Louis or Tyson in their primes, I'm not so sure..But Marciano would be kod by Dempsey...Styles, Styles...:good
Dempsey Levinsky http://query.nytimes.com/mem/archive-free/pdf?res=F10910FF395D147A93C5A9178AD95F4C8185F9 This one should put the cat among the pigeons http://news.google.com/newspapers?i...236,1784623&dq=jess+willard+harry+wills&hl=en
Funny since Tunney never fought any big, strong hard hitting opposition. The biggest heavyweight he ever faced was a roly poly untalented 203lb tom heeney Furthermore, Gene Tunney ducked George Godfrey, a 6'4 225lb hall of fame heavyweight. Tunney's style was not made to defeat bigger men. Tunney's style was made to fight SMALLER men. He relied on his long jab, leaning back to avoid punches, muscling in clinches..tricks that would not work against taller stronger powerful fighters.
Goodnite Irene, So let me get this straight. Jersey Joe Walcott won the heavyweight title in 1951 while he was washed up? You keep mentioning walcott was being 'washed up' when Marciano fought him, yet walcott was THE heavyweight champion of the world.
