All we can go on are the facts ... Wills, McVey, Smith, Flynn, Jeanette all said no one ever hit him as hard as Langford ... Johnson clearly wanted no part of a rematch ... old and half blind he was still flattening fighters like Godfrey and Norfolk .. he was a one off ..
 If there anything I dont doubt about Dempsey it's his power but im sorry there's probably a hell of alot of people who hit harder than him Foreman being one of them. If you think a Dempsey has enough power to lift a 214 lbs man of the canvas than you're delusional. Your statement would be correct if we were limiting him to the cruiserweight division, but in regards to heavyweights its a whole nother story. Tyson was asked after the Douglas fight if Douglas had good power and he said every single person who is 220lbs or over has good power. If you've ever done some sparring against bigger people than yourself, you'll know sometimes the jab of a heavyweight can rock you more than the hardest hooks thrown from someone whose 185 lbs.
Burt......your one of only a handful of posters who has a clue. Very accurate description of Dempsey. Arcel also termed Duran "the closest thing he ever saw to Jack Dempsey". Unlike all of us that comes from a man who watched Dempsey from ringside and trained Duran. Dempsey was that great that not only boxing historians but great all time trainers rated him as the very best ever.
There is a difference in a man who has a great powerful punch [ala Foreman] and a Joe Louis, Dempsey type, who though not as heavy will get to his target first almost every time...Give me the lithe fast puncher as a Louis, Dempsey, Robinson, Ezzard Charles,as they hit so much faster and wouldn't fizzle out as Foreman did in Zaire...No one hit as hard with a right hand as Bob Satterfield, but it is the great speedy combination punchers that "get there fustess with the mostess " an apt description by a Civil War General Bedford Forrest...
He was quick and strait to the target, never wide unless his target was wide open, Dempsey was tight and he was one of the first with short punches and stone hands
Dempsey had some sick power. Amongst other things he once broke somebodys ankle by punching them in the head. Intuitivley you would have to suspect that Foreman had more power in a single punch, but then there are punches and punches. Very few fighters have ever commited to a left hook in the same way that Dempsey somtimes did. When he set up a shot like that, he might have been hitting as hard as Foreman.
I did. You said nobody hit far harder than Dempsey (a ridiculous statement in itself as there are hundreds if not thousands of very powerful punchers that nobody has heard of) I said there is, gave an example and that's the end of it.
Only two outcomes I see here... 1. Norton gets blown out before 3 2. Norton catches Dempsey early.. gains his respect.. and proceeds to outbox dempsey for a clear UD
I agree with your points, but if an aggressive hard punching fighter consistently forced Ken backwards,he'd be beaten. I envisage Ken having a far better chance against a Gene Tunney than a rampant 'Manassa Mauler'
