No version of Ken Norton could ever defeat a prime Jack Dempsey...Dempsey fought to survive at hobo camps as a youth...too tough...
Like I said, I pick Jack to knock Norton out. But it isn't beyond the realms of possibility for Norton to upset him on points.
Dempsey destroys him Norton never fought anyone with such a combination of speed, power, and accuracy.
Respectfully, "there Are hundreds if not thousands of powerful punchers that nobody ever heard of that hit far harder than Dempsey ". Is this where ESB is heading ? Oh my...Sir name them....
Tough one. Dempsey hit hard... but at 6'1" and a little under 190 Lbs. did he have the strength and power to really rough up the 6'3" almost 220 Lb. Norton? How would he handle Norton's size, strength, jab, and decent power. I think Norton could outbox Dempsey. Dempsey was a busy fighter with good speed but he was far from a slickster. He'd come right at the bigger Norton and he wouldn't be hard to find. He wouldn't have much success with using rough tactics vs. Norton but I do admit he could hurt him if he could land a clean shot or two. I'm going with Norton by close decision in a hard fought fight.
Janitor, you overrate Dempsey as a finisher. Maybe if he actually proved he could finish a quality heavyweight of his era like Wills or Greb..but he didn't. He was not on Joe Louis or Mike Tyson's level as a finisher.
at what point does greb become a quality heavyweight when he never faced a puncher even remotely in the league of dempsey? dempsey would have smashed greb to pieces in an actual fight and all the dempsey critics who are attacking him for not fighting greb would be criticising him for beating a middleweight. As far as Foreman and Shavers are concerned, i believe they both hit harder than dempsey but not by a massive margin. However they were clearly harder punchers in terms of pure power than Jack was. Still Norton does not have the chin to withstand dempsey's power, even though dempsey doesn't hit as hard as foreman.
Are you? Are you really that lost and clueless or are you just a troll because it's really looking like that I SAID IN RESPONSE TO JANITOR WHO SAID NORTON HAS A BETTER CHANCE OF BEATING FOREMAN IN A REMATCH THEN BEATING DEMPSEY No. Foreman is far bigger, far stronger, more intimidating and hits alot harder than Dempsey also possibly more aggressive, Norton isn't going to be pushed around by a 180 pounder and his punches will land with more authority than when he hit Foreman which just made him madder. If Dempsey just tries to get him out of there as quickly as possible like against Firpo he might just find himself on his ass, Norton was a good counterpuncher and had good defense. Either man can win depending on how they handle the fight but I think Dempsey gets him in the end. KO 5. Norton wins one of a series tho. I SAID THIS ABOVE ^ UNDERSTAND? THEN YOU SAID Nobody hit, "far harder," than Dempsey...ever. He is within the realm of the hardest hitters who ever lived I RESPONDED TO THIS BY SAYING  If there anything I dont doubt about Dempsey it's his power but im sorry there's probably a hell of alot of people who hit harder than him Foreman being one of them. If you think a Dempsey has enough power to lift a 214 lbs man of the canvas than you're delusional. Your statement would be correct if we were limiting him to the cruiserweight division, but in regards to heavyweights its a whole nother story. Tyson was asked after the Douglas fight if Douglas had good power and he said every single person who is 220lbs or over has good power. If you've ever done some sparring against bigger people than yourself, you'll know sometimes the jab of a heavyweight can rock you more than the hardest hooks thrown from someone whose 185 lbs. THEN YOU SAID When you're done rolling your eyes, maybe you'd like to reply to what I actually wrote, instead of what you've mistakenly attributed to me. CLEARLY YOU ARE LOST AS I JUST DID RESPOND TO WHAT YOU 'ACTUALLY WROTE' BY SAYING THAT MANY PEOPLE HIT HARDER THAN DEMPSEY, FOREMAN IS ONE OF THEM. DESPITE THE FACT I ALREADY ADDRESSED YOUR COMMENT I STILL SAID I did. You said nobody hit far harder than Dempsey (a ridiculous statement in itself as there are hundreds if not thousands of very powerful punchers that nobody has heard of) I said there is, gave an example and that's the end of it. YOUR REPLY IS WHAT I QUOTED, WHERE YOUR THICK SKULL PREVENTED YOU FROM REALISING THAT I HAD ALREADY RESPONDED TO WHAT YOU SAID AND THAT IS WHAT I INFACT SAID. PLEASE READ CAREFULLY AND MAYBE JUST MAYBE SENSE WILL SINK IN. IM TYPING NICE AND BIG WHILE USING BOLD TO HIGHLIGHT QUOTES SO THAT IT MIGHT BE EASIER FOR YOU TO DIGEST.
Burt, trust me i've already said this if there is anything about Dempsey i don't doubt it's his power, I said in another thread Willard claiming till the day he died Dempsey had something in his gloves is testement to his punching power. In spite of this boxing is a very large sport with alot of history and alot of boxers having come and gone in the process and to think Dempsey is in the league of say Foreman is abit ridiculous as when it comes to punchers especially, weight makes a difference. That's why someone like Bob Foster as frightening as his power was at light heavy had no effect on heavyweights. If someone could ask Ali who hit harder Liston, Foreman, Shavers or Foster what do you think he'd say? In response to your question ill name some i think hit harder: Marciano, Elmer Ray, Curtis Sheppard, lem franklin, Liston, Foreman, Shavers, Max Baer, Joe Louis, turkey thompson, tommy morrison, bert cooper, frank bruno, cleveland williams, gerry cooney, wlad klitschko, Tyson, Bowe, David Tua, Lewis, Razor Ruddock, Bonecrusher Smith For all anybody knows Tami Mauriello and other more obscure boxers like Charley Retzlaff perhaps hit harder.
I like Jack Dempsey's chances but he is still on the small side. You take an all time great puncher, move 'em to a division 30 pounds heavier and their power is suddenly average. But as someone already said here, quoting Tyson about Douglas, anybody who weighs 220 or in this case hits like 220 has power and can hurt you. Jack Dempsey doesn't have to hit as hard as George Foreman, Earnie Shavers, or David Tua to knock Norton out. However, what many people are not figuring into their equations is that since Dempsey is a smaller man, he is also quite a bit faster, and his torque is actually where his power comes from. Hypothetically, you don't have to be big. If you can whip your body around fast enough like a Dempsey, a Louis, or a Tyson you can crush guys quite a bit larger than you. You'll probably out land them too if they can't keep the fight on the outside.
In a poll in the Ring some years ago, Dempsey was named as the biggest hitter of the heavyweights. Whilst that is contentious, he was a very big puncher against all sizes. He broke Big Ben Wray's jaw in two places with one punch.Wray was 7'2" 300lbs.
