On paper Holmes should run away with this. He has the dimensions, chin, technical ability and the jab to dissect Dempsey who could get wild and sloppy.

In real life Holmes dropped two to a LHW (albeit a very good one) and had some skin-of-the teeth moments against Shavers and Snipes.

Dempsey I would confidently say was (at his prime) better than Spinks, Snipes and Shavers and he had the combination of speed and punching power to crack a defence right open. So at the least he'd be a very live underdog. If he caught Holmes like Shavers and Snipes did, he'd finish the job.

No heavy in history born in the 1800's would defeat ANY MODERN atg heavy. Meaning atg's from the 30's up to the 1990's . I'm very (like most posters here) nostalgic on fighters from previous eras. And yes skill wise the last 20 yrs have in my opinion been some of the worse fighters in the history of the game have fought for championships , and especially at heavy. The Wilders and Joshua's are some the worst heavyweight champs in history and fight on a rudimentary level but they do have enough skills and especially athleticism to defeat ANYONE from that era. Dempsey by what little film there is of him did nothing that special to consider him capable of defeating Holmes. Sure he was strong for that era, hit hard for that era, fought aggressively, and was exciting. But hell we don't even no if he was the best Heavy weight of that era, because of his refusal to fight black fighters. (May not have been strictly his fault, America didnt want to see another J.Johnson. Racial climate was far worse then today.) but those are the facts. Dempsey could have been a threat to J.Louis, maybe Marciano (very debatable) but any ATG, after those two would defeat him by knockout in my opinion.

Holmes gets off the canvas once or twice to win a decision or stop him late.
