Has there ever been a more crazy, brutal and dramatic first round of any boxing title fight in history ?
great first round but i prefer Hagler vs Hearns this is second Holt-Torres 2 was rined for me by the headbutt and i reckon if it didnt happen holt was oing to be KOd
I'm sure if we could watch this round on film in color and as clear as what we can watch Hagler-Hearns on nobody would be picking Hagler-Hearns over this. It was nuts. ****ing nuts.
You see these types of rounds in toughman contests. Honestly, both participants were sloppy as hell. I can't believe Dempsey was getting hit with those wild shots of Firpo's. The man was swinging wildly. No technique at all. Thank God heavyweight boxing has come a long way since those days. Not one of the finer moments of the sport. Hagler v. Hearns was infinitely more brutal. There we had two men who could box who were wailing on each other. There's no comparison. This is the Sweet Science, people, not uncultured brawling. You had Benny Leonard fighting during Dempsey's time, for crying out loud. Learn to box. Tunney was a breath of fresh air!!! One of the questions I have about the film of the fight I have seen is that, not when Dempsey is knocked out of the ring (after taking several direct hits), but when Dempsey appears to either get floored in the opening seconds or simply falls down. The film is edited here almost as if there is an attempt to excise this moment out of the history of the fight so as not to embarrass Dempsey. I have seen this edit in several different versions. What's the story behind this? Is there another version of the film? There appear to be other edits, as well. Was the film damaged? I just watched the fight again to make sure I was remembering it properly. After knocking Firpo down several times, Dempsey gets nailed with a shot behind the head and then is knocked down by a follow up shot. Firpo has him going for awhile there. Even after knocked him through the ropes. But Firpo is in the end doomed because while Dempsey was taking those shots, while Firpo couldn't. Dempsey was one tough dude, that's for sure. And he could hit.
There has never been anything like that round in the heavyweight division that I know of. Dramatic is an understatement!
I've read a few different accounts of the fight and they've been pretty consistent in that Dempsey sagged to his knees and grabbed onto Firpo to pull himself back up. His knees touched the canvas so it officially counts as KD, though basically a flash KD and there was no count. He's knocked down once more, another flash KD with no count. Then he's knocked out of the ring.
I'm inclined to agree with you, though he was pretty badly hurt from the punches that came before it. I think he would have gone down even if he hadn't been shoved out of the ring, though I think the fall out of the ring might have done more damage than the actual punches.
Meza-Garza Gomez-Hill Park-Espadas Sithchatawal-Monshipour Mancini-Frias Patterson-Johanssen III all excellent first rounds that have yet to be mentioned
