Yes he was ,but a bit inconsistent.
Losses to Louis, Braddock, Risko,Loughran, and Schaaf are forgivable.
    Uzcudun
    Kennedy
    Abbot
    McCarthy
    Perhaps not.

This fight would end similar to Louis-Baer where Baer attempts to unload and Dempsey goes into killer mode...Baer may drop Dempsey but once the switch was flipped in Dempsey he overwhelms Baer and ends it with Baer on a knee shaking his head

Baer had a solid chin and big time power but he wasn't an attacking killer like Jack wasn't a near equal power predator like Jack was when punches started flying

Dempsey at his killer best can unload on Max.

Max is an incredible force as well, but Dempsey has superior lateral movement, Max will have a hard time catching Dempsey with a clean shot. I think Max will shake up and hurt Demspey, but not enough to win the rounds. Max will do better than most expect, but Dempsey is busier, and Max will respect his power and wont win the trades.

Both fighters will be hurt in this one. Neither will want a rematch.

    Great fight. Dempsey UD

Dempsey would smash him. Far too vicious, quick hitting and elusive for the ponderous and wild swinging Baer. Baer likely lasts for a few rounds, taking horrible punches to the chin, but at some point he goes down and stays down. Wouldn't be surprised to see Dempsey get a big manhandled in the early going though. Baer was quite a rough customer.

I just really don't get why Firpo is constantly brought up as a form of measuring stick as to who beats Dempsey. The top contenders that Dempsey knocked out on his way to the top were a ton better than Firpo and they all lost in 1 rd.

    I agree.

I think that somebody was always going to get lucky, and catch Dempsey coming in, and that it just happened to be Firpo.

I don't think that Firpo would be likely to repeat his relative success in a rematch.

Dempsey by KO. Similar to the Frazier bout being currently debated. Dempsey's defense wasn't as refined as Frazier's (it wasn't bad), he had genuine two fisted power and ways of delivering it. Dempsey would also scare Baer as Louis did.

    Dempsey UD

Max had a helluva chin but wasn't a very refined fighter, he was basically a one handed brawler with an A class chin. He had the power to put the lights out on Jack but I think Dempsey avoids the more loaded up punches and fights back enough to scare Max from the lighter blows

I don't think Dempsey has the power to stop Max but his accuracy and Flurries could do the job for him, but I'd pick Baer's chin.

Great 50/50 fight, Dempsey emerges as the winner

Dempsey wins in a similar situation as Tyson v Ruddock 2 imo.
Baer would cling on when hurt , throw some hard shots that rock Dempsey , maybe hit the floor at least once , but loses by Decision.
Dempsey s wild man attack has Max on the ropes and rips his confidence away .

    Another vote for Dempsey.

Baer is as strong as a bull, yes, but he doesn't have Dempsey's speed, his accuracy or his technical ability. I think he gets bombed out to be honest, because Max's defence was just a bit better than a heavy bag's.

Jack was faster, had better footwork better defence more of a killer instinct and from watching the two fight I'm not convinced baer was a bigger puncher, when Jack hit someone they seemed to fly across the ring more often than when Baer lands. Baer has a better chin but I give it to Jack

I don’t think this is even close.
Max has the proverbial punchers chance but that’s about it.
He has nothing else to keep Dempsey off him.
No jab, footwork or upper body movement, he’s a relatively stiff upright fighter.
    I think Dempsey decimates him.

People sell Baer too short here. Dempsey is clear favorite with good style (and chin) to beat him, but Maxie could be always dangerous.
