I agree, compared to fighters then, he did set up his attacks, obviously had the ‘Dempsey roll’ but I think compared to more modern fighters he’d be considered crude, and that Dempsey roll would be quickly adjusted to and people would know what it is and it would become a telegraph.
Another thing, when someone would attack him, rather than use his feet to step back which would create openings, he’d kind of lean back with his chin in the air which means he can’t counter, and also against someone with long arms like Spinks, would leave him completely open to the straight right if set up.

Dempsey wouldn't just repeat his roll over and over again though, he would do it in spurts which is much less of a tell. I also don't really see where Dempsey leans back with his chin in the air in a position where he can't counter, either.

In the top video where he’s sparring, when his sparring partner commits, he often leans back a bit excessively with an upright posture.

I wouldn't say he leans back in that clip, nor that he isn't in a position to counter or move his head and feet. He frequently rolls, pulls his rear hand up, The main flaw with Dempsey in this clip I've noticed is how he keeps his jaw open, but with the way he intelligently defends himself I wouldn't say it's a significant flaw. I couldn't notice an instance where he looked like he leaned back without bringing his rear hand up, or as a last resort to defend himself because he was in such a bad position.

Yeah, Spinks was 6'2 and was a solid 208 pounds at heavyweight. If Spinks was around in Dempseys time, he would be Big Michael Spinks at 6'2 208 pounds.

Let me ask a better question, who the **** voted for Spinks to knockout Dempsey?

Spinks couldn't walk through a considerably past prime Holmes and was in fact nearly knocked out by him on at least one occasion but he's walking through Dempsey, a much more powerful puncher? Keep dreaming kid.

Considering that Devon guy said Spinks would walk through him, smart money's on him.

Resign you imbecile. Every boxer shows up for money it’s a job - he did the best he could with what he had but to call what he did disgraceful? All you do is sling mud and be negative from what I’ve seen.

“Resign, you imbecile,” to open a post, followed by, “you’re too negative.” LOL.

He wrote the blueprint for Seldon & Etienne.

In this case I believe Jack Dempsey winning by KO 1 is a likely outcome over Michael Spinks.

Of course he wasn’t a pure boxer but per the requirements of his style as a swarmer/puncher, I think Dempsey was technical enough.

At his acute best, I tend to think Dempsey could score an early to mid round KO of Spinks.

Agreed on all counts. His biography is an example of his understanding of the sweet science.
