Burt actually started a thread in here (the CLASSIC forum) the other day praising the Khan-Maidana fight.
So your accusations don't quite ring true.

Also, of course the game was better when there were less world champions and less divisions. I think any reasonable fan can see that the alphabet mess and the 17 weight class nonsense, with a hundred world champs, has further damaged the sport.
Also, the pre-TV days of the small fight club venues cannot be viewed in a negative light. There was a lot of boxing then, lots of guys willing to fight on short-notice, and two, three times a month, and I consider that a good thing.

  3. still it does not prove that tyson had better chin, maybe dempsey was not tested against the hardest punchers but still he was ko only once when he was green, tyson was stoped 5 times in less fights(an he was not stoped by foreman, shavers or liston exactly), we never will know if dempsey would take the shots from the rivals of tyson, but you do not know if tyson would take the shots from firpo, it is speculation, i am talking about facts and anyway tyson was stoped by holyfield or buster douglas (no way evander or douglass did hit as hard as firpo 31(26ko), firpo was also stronger than them)

  4. i would say from 1989 onwards

Thanks for your support U. I shouldn't have to defend myself against a poster who thinks boxing started with Mike Tyson...And who cannot be civil in a debate on ESB.
But,I love many many Modern fighters from Ray Robinson on. A few such as Arguello, Duran, Ray Leonard, Hagler, Mathew Saad , Marquez, Israel Vasquez,[one of my alltime favorites], Joe Frazier [saw him whip Ali MSG],
George Chuvalo [a man's man],Maidana, Shane Mosely,at lightweight , and a host of great fighters too numerous to mention...I also read boxing
histories of the great fighters of the past, many who i had seen ringside.
So I have a broad spectrum of alltime favorites, regardless when they fought. I happen to believe fervently that the fighters of the past who fought 2 or 3 times the amount of bouts, that today's boxers fight ,by sheer
experience had to develope more all around skills by necessity...Common
sense tells us that. Thanks once more U...b.b.

Well Dempsey was ko'd in the first. Tyson was only ever stopped on accumulation and his last 2 losses were quit jobs not real KO losses.

Yes Tyson has been ko'd more times, by bigger better more accurate punchers than Dempsey ever faced as outside of Tunney he avoided the best contenders. He also fought well past his prime, Dempsey didn't fight much past his prime

Firpo was a puncher of sorts, but I'd rate Bruno, Rudduck and Smith as bigger and more accurate punchers, Firpo's skills and accuracy were pretty awful

Burt obviously has a massive bias towards past fighters and tends to think a boxer is automatically better because of the amount of fights a boxer has. We all have our biases but I think Pachiles makes fair points

There is political problems today and generally the standards have gone down over the last 10-20years. However boxers ducking each other, champions being innactive and dirty politics in the sport are nothing new. Fighters wearing the cuffs was also far more common in the past, fighters drawing the colour bar, boxers ruining each other through so many fights.

  11. bruno maybe, ruddock and firpo had around the same hitting power, and smith no way did hit as hard as firpo.anyway i am talking about the chin, and you have nothing except speculation to say that tyson had better chin. because tyson did not face the rivals of dempsey and dempsey never faced the rivals of tyson so we can talk only about facts and tyson was stoped more times in less fights.

tyson would destroy dempsey while sitting on a stool and using 1 hand one body punch from tyson dempsey folds and turtles one head shot dempsey is knocked out cold:think

Not a big fan of Tyson but imagine how fearsome he would be, if like Dempsey, he had the advantage of standing over a knocked down opponent. He wouldnt have lost to Douglas and the first Bruno fight would be 20 seconds long!
The ferocity of Dempsey is overplayed because Dempsey's oppenents were never given time to recouperate

This whole forum is generally based on speculation. The facts are Tyson fought around 50 fighters weighing over 200lbs, Dempsey fought a handful, Tysons chin was tested by much bigger punchers

Rudduck/Bruno/Smith have explosive KO wins on film over big men, I haven't see any footage showing Firpos power, not saying he didnt have it and he looked strong but it isnt proven on film

Tyson fought the best contenders and champions of his day, Dempsey did not Tunney aside. All in all Dempsey is not proven against the best of his time

Prime Dempsey beats 1996 Tyson. I do n't look upon the '96 version of Tyson as prime though. He was in good condition that year.but he'd lost a lot of his movement. he beat Bruno easier the second time they fought, because Bruno froze. Whereas the first time out,Frank did n't freeze.
