Jack Dempsey vs Prime Frank Bruno

I’ve been mulling this over and I just don’t see how Bruno would deal with Dempsey’s super powers. Dempsey out-ATGs him, sooner than later. Too much class and greatness.

Bruno hit very hard but unless he catches Dempsey as he attacks he gets busted up and stopped Tyson stile.

 

I think it’s quite comparable actually. Old Norton, old Lyle, Dino Dennis, Philip brown, George Chaplin,

Brunos best wins? Old Coetzee, old Tillis, old Bugner, old truth Williams and McCall. It’s more of the same.

 

Exactly, and it is mystifying for those of us who were around and know his career backwards.

Seems Bruno gets a ticket to some gold club because he resembles Joshua or something, I don’t get it.

 

Actually I was companring Fulton to Cooney... a poor man's Cooney.

Beating a champ in McCall places Bruno well above the fray.

 

Jack couldn't necessarily match Tyson's physicality. Too many components missing in the required amounts.

And please let's not act like Dempsey was all-action, all the time, even against opponents without Bruno's physical gifts. Hapless Brennan was able to fight him to a standstill for over 10 rounds, lil' Tommy Gibbons the same...

 

It says a lot that your examples of Dempsey's failures are someone he knocked out both times he fought, and someone lastiing the distance with him while losing, someone who was never stopped until their last fight.

 

One was Bill Brennan who was as tepid as they come, beaten 4 times by Greb, beaten by Miske, KO'd by a dying Miske. Are really going to compare him to Bruno?

The other was a career lightheavy who has not a single decent pelt at heavyweight, who had no business at heavyweight and who had lost the elimination bout for a shot at the heavyweight crown but still was chosen.

That is telling.

 

It has a certain ring to it.

I'll give him credit. He was tough and fearless. Got back in the ring with Dempsey and did well the second time around. Looked pretty good in that fight. Got back in with Greb repeatedly after getting soundly thrashed. Met an unfortunate end. As a great writer once titled his book... You Can't Win.

 

If they were still alive, Terry and Mickey would be mystified, but proud that they had done their job well. Our Frank has nearly reached the 9th page of the "Classic Boxing Forum", yes, the "Classic"! Who would have believed it ?

 

I think that is exactly the sort of fighter that we should compare to Bruno.

Somebody who looked good on paper, performed spectacularly against B grade opposition, sometimes even looked good against the best, but always lost when they stepped up!

 

Like he got "destroyed" by Tyson and Lewis when he was younger? There are NO facts to claim something like that.

The truth is, this is a duell between a not so heavy, but very sharp puncher with quick movement and a fighter who would actual kill Willard if he had half the free shots Dempsey had. In other words: Against brutal raw power, but not very sharp or quick, with the disadvantage to gas late, on the other hand a very solid jab.

Bruno was able to go toe to toe with Tyson at the beginning. This question comes down to if Dempsey could ring Brunos phone when landing (and Bruno freezing), because if Bruno lands Dempseyis is in a world of trouble. Bruno would manhandle Dempsey in the clinch as well. Another option for Dempsey against Brunos reach and ramrod jab by going late? I don´t know. Brunos size would tire Dempsey out as well.

 

This is actually a good point. Dempsey wasnt exactly a late round stamina machine so taking bruno out late isnt the most viable strategy.

The fight is closer than people are willing to admit. Dempsey has to overcome many things to win and so does Bruno.
