Dempsey by knockout. Why ? Because from the perspective of a poll conducted
in the 1950s when Marciano was champion, a poll was asked with senior boxing writers who saw Dempsey at his best, and were asked this question :
Who would have won between a prime Jack Dempsey and today's champion Rocky Marciano ? Almost to the man they chose Jack Dempsey, because he was so much faster and more accurate a puncher than Marciano who truly missed half his punches....And I concur with that poll in 1954...Both hit tremendously hard but Dempsey hit much faster and more accurate...

And please to name me the all the current champions post-Dempsey that writers and pundits thought to be great and those whose rankings did not grow after their careers?

It is fairly endemic that the current champ is rated low. See Marciano, Clay, Holmes, Lewis, Waldo...

The Dempsey/Marciano fight would have been a great fight...I see your reasoning, but Bert, current champions are rarely if ever given any credit as being great fighters it seems in polls...appreciation for a fighter generally goes up after he has been retired awhile...
Addendum: But with that said though...I agree with you on the speed and accuracy point. It's a brutal fight either way...Marciano wasn't accurate per se, but one punch lead to another, and he carried momentum...it was like right hand, slip, left hand, slip...he came on in waves...Gil Clancey commented once, that Marciano could miss his right hand by a mile then tag you with a left hook on the button...What might offset Marciano some is Dempsey's footwork...In the Firpo fight, Dempsey would dig hard left hooks to the body while moving his feet and spinning his opponent keeping them off balance...there were many layers to Dempsey's game, that he is not given credit for. This would be a brutal fight though...If it's early...I'd say Dempsey...if it goes past 12, I'd say Rocky.

Dempseys overwhelmingly aggression and all out attack cuts Marciano to ribbons. Dempsey was the far greater technical fighter and he would hit Marviano with punches the power of which Rocky never imagined. Seventh round tko in a one sided bout.

I have to concur with Burt. The speed and accuracy of Dempsey's punches would be the difference here.

Dempsey never beat a fighter near Marciano's quality. Marciano was used to being the second fasteSt guy in the ring and still winning. He was stronger and more relentless. If Dempsey tries an early onslaught, there will be no reprieve when he tries to catch his breath. He will have dug himself into a hole that Marciano would gladly fill. Marciano had enough craft and guile to last the early rounds.

Dempsey is my favourite fighter ,and I think he wins this,he was quicker of hand and foot ,threw shorter, more accurate punches ,was better defensively, and had less tendency to cut.

Having said that, he isn't going to have all his own way with Rocky, this would be a war for the ages imo

Marciano conceded speed and accuracy to almost every fighter he faced. The result?

    Could go either way.

At their best Dempsey has the tools to win. But if he tries to bully or comes in with no respect he's getting banged out.

Marciano was never hit like he would be hit by Dempsey.

Dempsey would never be hit like he would be hit by Marciano... and certainly not as often. And keeping that left low as he charged in would not be advisable.

I know how you feel about Fury, but I think you could probably add him to that list.
