I have seen old films of dempsey and I have to say, I'm not impressed. In the early part of the 20th century when he fought, boxing technique was much different. He kept his hands as low as possible and had an almost only offensive style. He may have had great knockout power vs his competition but his competition wasn't that great even compared to Rocky. I see him as a glorified barroom brawler and that's all he was, he had no real training. He was just a bare knuckle knuckle fighter with gloves.
Thought about it many timed like when Sanders made mincemeat of Wlad who was to stupid to do anything but block punches with his face He probably figured thats the best to see a punch coming at you is directly in front of it Sanders wouldn't beat Willard easy like that Willard broke a guys neck with an uppercut
Marciano beats Dempsey. When you have two brawlers who like to fight inside the pocket and are close to the same size, the one with more proven stamina, power and chin against the better opposition is likely to pull it off.. In this case that would be Rocky.
I don't know why people say Marciano had more proven stamina. Both of them went 15 rounds exactly once, and both were fighting fast pace and hard punching until the final bell.
That was the second fight I was referring to their first one and while we are on the subject why was there a second one? Marciano was 39-0 Buonvino was 24-14-8 and had just been kod by Joe Baksi in 54 seconds, and had won just 2 of his last 7 fights . " One of the most powerful punches Rocky ever took?" Buonvino's s record of 24 fights has 5 stoppages on it. The records of the victims are 20-14-2 , 0-1-0,0-1-0,2-13-1 and the other was a light heavy. Buonvinos ko percentage is 10%! Buonovino had zero power.
Claiming that Willard's skillset is anywhere near that of Wlad's is an absolute proclamation of ignorance regarding the sport of boxing.
I know.. I've watched the youtube showing of Dempsey vs Willard several times, and Willard is standing within less than a foot of Dempsey with his guard hanging down to his crotch. The man had no defense and was clueless as to how to take advantage of his reach. When Jack opened up with huge bombs leaving himself open to counter attack, Willard had no answer and instead of holding, blocking or getting the hell out of the way, he extended his arms outward as though he was trying to keep him at bay. I honestly think Quick Tillis would have battered Willard that day and it probably wouldn't have lasted much longer.
Flynnn has a 33% ko record, considering he fought: Johnson x 2 Langford x5 Dillonx4 Norton ko win Miske Rodell Levinsky O Brien Flowers Gardner x2. I ko win Kaufman x2 .1 ko win Barry Root Sullivan x4 Papke Caponi Morris x3 McCarty x2 Coffey Smith x2 Dempsey x2. 1 ko win I think that is pretty good compared to Buonvino's 10% and the fact that he only fought: Baksi kod by 1rd Savold ko'd by 1 rd Barone a light heavy kod by 3rds
Watch rounds two and three not just round one those rounds made me see Willard in a different light i'm not saying he was great he was better then i thought he was Dempsey got the drop in round one never gave Willard a chance to clear his head fighting in 104 degrees midwest humidity Willard doesn't get knocked down in those rounds its he couldn't continue after round 3 in round 3 he hit Dempsey with an uppercut that worried Jacks trainer but Willard was to far gone to capitalize on it
Dempsey fought at the same pace and work rate Marciano did in round 15 vs Charles??? I watched Dempsey vs gibbons..an absolute bore. Gibbons didn't show much. He should have never got the title shot in the first place, he lost in dominating fashion in the title eliminator
