The fact that you are assessing Willard'd style/skills based on the Dempsey fight, is a catastrophic flaw in your argument. Would you asses Michael Spinks based on the Tyson fight, and consider that to be a thorough assessment?
Marciano's stamina in the Moore fight was unreal at times. I don't doubt that Dempsey had the stamina when he was young tho, he appeared to have the body fat of a scorpion.
The problem with assessing fighters based on fights where they get destroyed, is well, they are getting destroyed. They are being prevented from implementing their usual MO, for whatever reason, and their opponent is making them look bad to some extent. This might be excusable, if those fights were the only available footage of Willard/Spinks, but they are not.
The difference is Marciano was 29 years old , in his prime, and 5 months away from winning the title. Dempsey was 21 years old and it was 2 and a half years before he won the title.
. And what does Wlad look like when he fought Sanders..He looked like he had no business being there..Willard was fighting a future Hall of Famer what's Wlads excuse? Wlad showed he can't take a punch and he can't find a way to win when the chips are down..Boxing benefits or suffers depending on who's HW champ In times of great champions ,public interest is high, In times of non great champions, boxing suffers as a whole, leaving the lighter divisions to keep it alive What have the Klitschko's done to make interest in boxing like Ali, Dempsey even Mike Tyson did ? If they were great Boxing would attain its past glory They have nothing special to offer that makes the general public care about boxing. Because they generate no excitement amongst the public because you don't get the feeling they are special
That he had underestimated his opponent, who turned out to be a heck of a lot better than he'd bargained for?
No it isn't because I'm not evaluating Willard as a fighter in general but the type of opponent that he was when he met Dempsey. And Frankly I don't think he gets passed the third round against most heavyweight champions, particularly those who could punch. Holding your guard as low as he did when your standing within inches of a big hitter with fast hands is foolish and he clearly didn't know how to tie Jack up when he was in trouble. Tyson, Foreman, Lewis, Liston and a few others I can think of would have dispatched that version of Willard before the bell sounded to ended the first round.
I doubt that Wlad always trains hard and is ready he got hit in the chin he couldn't take it ,,You never did watch rounds 2-3 of dempsey willard fight did you?..I showed a friend Sanders Klitschko fight ..They never watch boxing i just wanted him to assess Wlad with the same ihfo your using to assess Willard What do you think he said about prime Wlad we laughed are asses off
