i cant think of a more thrilling battle to fuel the imagination of a boxing fan.

and picking a winner to me is next to impossible.

for marciano stands his unblemished record and his awkwardness.

dempsey had the greater speed on his side as well as a hight advantage.

both had great chins, but unlike dempsey, rocky never got knocked out as a fighter. then again, dempsey only got stopped once and he was not a "managed" fighter like marciano was, often having to fight without proper preperation, so the lone knockoutloss can be ignored to a great degree.

both had bonebreaking power. dempsey was more ferocious and he had one decisive advantage: marciano got cut easily and often suffered horrible facial damage.

dempsey had skin like leather, never having trouble with cuts, even in the "free for all" era that he fought in.

so i make dempsey a slight favorite.

    so who wins???

    opinions please.

p.s. make this fight with both at the hight of their powers.

KO Dream Fights saw it this way

In his day, Dempsey's swarming damn-the-torpedoes style and heavy hands produced vicious knockouts, and his brutalisation of Jess Willard remains the most savage beating a heavyweight champion has ever recieved in losing the title.

In Marciano, Dempsey would not be meeting the kind of fighting against which he excelled, i.e, the ponderous slow moving likes of Willard and Firpo. At 5'10, Marciano was two inches shorter than T"he Manassa Mauler", and at 184 pounds, about the same weight. This would suit Marciano just fine, since the only heavyweight champion to retire undefeated made a career of cutting down bigger opponents with his sledgehammer overhand rights and uppercuts.

Of the two, Dempsey may have hit harder with one blow, but Marciano was a far better infighter and, tho ungainly, was also better defensively.

This would be fought in the trenches, since neither of these guys could take a step backward even if he wanted to. Ultimately, Marciano, perhaps the most finely conditioned heavyweight champion ever, would wear Dempsey down with his clubbing blows and tireless attack and, for once, superior technique. Having been stopped only once in 78 bouts, Dempsey's chin was steel and it would enable him to finish on his feet, thought barely.

Marciano by unaminous hard fought decision.

I think the statement that Marciano was a "far better infighter" is ludicrous. It's also very arguable that Marciano had better defense, if either had significantly better defense than the other it was Dempsey.

Alright, I'm done. I'm not going to look at this thread again, I swear it!

Dempsey was a better in fighter than Marciano faster on his feet and with his hands ,Marciano probably had a shade more one shot power, but Dempsey was better defensively and more elusive , Jack came for you in his crouch so his height "advantage"is negated,he didnt "fight tall".Dempsey was less cut prone ,though Rocky's facial damage has been somewhat exagerated.Marciano possibly carried his power better into the later rounds.Dempsey tended to get you early,if you could survive the first hurricane ,you could maybe stick around for the finish,Marciano could clobber you late,he threw bombs all night .My pick is Dempsey,in a tear up I dont think I would bet against him.

I think Marciano's combination of being durable + defensively skilled makes him survive the early onslaught. For instance, Walcott fought extremely aggressive during their first round and although he had Rocky down, he was never in danger of getting stopped. Needless to say, Marciano will return fire plenty.

Once the bell rings for the 5th time and Marciano is still standing there, what can Dempsey do? I think Jack would tire badly by the 10th from Rocky's (and his own) pace as well as the heavy body punches. Marciano by TKO.

I'm probably in the minority in that I think Dempsey has an easier time with Louis than Marciano, though I think both are better than Rocky. As Chris says the longer this goes the better Rocky,s chances imo ,rather like Frazier against Liston, imo.

Jack said Marciano hit harder then either he or Louis. That aside, have to take Marciano if he doesn't cut up too bad for a stoppage.

Both fought out of the crouch.

    Dither.
Ten round fight Dempsey by decision. 15 rounds for Rocky.
And Dempsey fought some ten rounder by choise.
It would be a hell of a fight.

    Current boxing rules and regulations?

    Marciano gets stopped on cuts.

Neither one of these guys is going to stop, but as mentioned, Marciano suffered injuries that would see a modern fight stopped.

You can beat on Dempsey's face with a brick and probably not cut him.

Also, to anyone who screams "Marciano would kill him...!"

Marciano had to warm up to get the best fighters he fought out of there, if he got them out of there at all.

VERY late stoppage of Walcott, half the fight to get rid of an old Joe Louis, 15 rounds with Ezzard...

Dempsey's more durable than anyone there, hence I feel he has the time to mash Marciano's face up and get that stoppage.
