The implication of your argument is that Dempsey simply lacked the discipline to even reasonably look out for himself.

That is different than not being able to escape poverty.

I guess the question would be so what? Such a lack of discipline would be part of his makeup and impact him as a fighter. No reason to give him any credits for it.

Personally, I doubt that he was actually "starving" for any serious length of time from 1916 on.

It's not my argument in actuality. It's a scenario that has played out forever in boxing and all of sport. Young uneducated men do not keep lots of money for lengthy periods. It's spent on fun hence the discussion the lender had with the young Dempsey after the fact no doubt.

Dempsey though I'd be rooting for Marciano to make me eat my words.

I think it's pretty obvious then that Dempsey was broke as hell. Guess what, when you're broke as hell you can't eat right to keep up with an intense training regime that it takes to be a professional fighter.

Running 7 miles per day, sparring 10+ rounds, lots of shadowboxing and bag work, not to mention Dempsey "trained til he dropped". In other words he put in lots of hard work. 3 small meals (that's being extremely generous) isn't enough.

3 small meals is generous and unlikely...But Dempsey knocks him out so he gets his doughnut for the day
