Studying The Film, I think Walcotts footwork was better than tunney's. tunneys footwork was designed for one thing, to run away. walcott could do that do, but his footwork was also designed to lay counter traps, pretend to walk away then BAM come over the top with a right hand. his footwork was much more unpredictable because he was always going either in and out or side to side and you didnt know which one, the walcott waltz was confusing as hell to opponents.......and only two men ever caught up to walcott in his prime and it took them 26 and 13 rounds respectivley........there names were joe louis and rocky marciano.

Tunney stopped three heavyweights who were never stopped Madden,Gibbons,Heeney ,is that zilch? Walcott had around 15 defeats on his record,6 by stoppage Tunney didnt have any.[/quote]

Tunney didnt have any stoppages because what heavyweight punchers other than dempsey did he fight? better yet, how many fighters did tunney fight over 200lb??? Walcott fought 18 fights against punchers, many fights against 200lb + heavyweights....Unlike Tunney he didnt have good management and training early in his career where he suffered most of his losses.

Jersey Joe Walcott beat Joe Louis(first fight), Ezzard Charles 2x, Harold Johnson, Jimmy Bivins, Joey Maxim 2x, Elmer Ray 2x, Lee Q Murray, Joe Baksi, Hein Ten Hoff, Tommy Gomez, Hatchetman Sheppard 2x, Willie Reddish, Lee Oma, Ollie Tandberg.

Tunney at heavyweight Beat Jack Dempsey 2x, Charley Weinhert, Emilio Spalla, Tom Heeney, 35 year old Tommy Gibbons Thats it. Pretty Weak if you ask me.

Really There is no comparison who beat the better opposition at heavyweight. you talk about losses, how bout wins?

Marciano by Ko after a rough, wear down battle, Marciano's stamina and late power rise to the occasion....Marciano by Ko 9-15

To summarize, Walcott's footwork had more variety and as you put it, no one knew his next move which is why Louis found himself on the canvas a few times, not to mention Charles and Marciano.

Tunney was a bit faster on his feet, but rarely sat down on his punches. I still think it's amazing how he knocks down Dempsey while on the backfoot (as i remember).

The problem with bringing up Gene Tunney is that Dempsey did not beat Tunney. He was totally outclassed with the exception, and it is a big one, of that 7th round explosion in the second fight. Most observers did not give Dempsey one round against Tunney in 1926.

I think Tunney was better than Dempsey, myself, and Tunney in fact has a better chance of beating Marciano than Dempsey does. Just an opinion off watching the old films.

Well, I think the only round that maybe "Score" for Dempsey was perhaps round 4. Of the 8 rounds I seen any way of the first fight.

good point, I also thought Walcott had the slicker style by far and more power than Tunney

Now Of Course Win We Have A Matchup It Is (prime For Prime)s Quito U Cant Hardley Judge Dempsey By His Tunney Fights, thats Like Evaluating Joe Louis In His Matchup Against Rocky-hardly Fair.true Dempsey Wassnt Totally Washed Up But He Had Lost Alot Of The Ferocity, quick Reflexes, and The Hunger/became More Ciilized Also His Style Ive Red Was Also A Little Differnt.a Prime Dempsey Would Have Ben Way To Fast And Alusive-he Would Have Painted The Canvas With The Rocks Blood-but Rock, also One Of My Favs. Wouldnt Quit Until The Ref. Or Corner Stopped It

You can say Tunney didnt meet any big punchers at heavyweight, apart from Dempsey ,but you cannot state that is the reason he wasnt Kod ,that is like saying Jim Jeffries wasnt really durable because he never met big men ,we just don't know those answers. You keep trotting out the same tired old line about how many 200lbs + fighters did Tunney Meet ?,well lets have a look at Walcott Willie Reddish 18-4-0,never ranked.
Lee Q Murray 38-8-2,dsqd for not trying
Johnny Allenx2 11-15-1 and 19-17-1,a ham and egger
    JimWhitest,0-1-0,enough said!
    Bob Tow22-15-2,ham and egger
    Johnny Shckor29-17-2
Hein Ten Hoff,18-0-3 never beat a decent fighter.
    Ollie Tandberg,23-5-1 decent
    Joe Baksi 45-4-3 good fighter.
    Leo Wiggins 0-2-0 pathetic.
Abe Simon 24-5-0 ponderous giant without a punch
    Joe Louis,aging great
Simon kod Walcott ,Louis beat him twice despite what you say that was the verdict. So out of the 12 men who weighed over 200lbs about 5 of them were any good and Walcott lost to two of them.Walcott had around 70 recorded fights ,andghe held a weight advantage in 33 of them. You mentioned he beat Maxim twice, you didnt say that Maxim also beat him ,you also mentioned Harold Johnson ,Johnson went down in the third with an injuiry to his vertebrae he hadnt been hit.Walcott,s best fights were losing ones in the main the close one with a faded Louis who would have kod him inside of 10 rds 5 years earlier, imo,Walcott.s terrific fight with Marciano, still a loss and his series with Charles which they split.
