Dempsey was great when guys went straight at him. Even greater if those guys are the size Shaun Porter. Jack by knockout
For me, it's a battle of mystiques. And as much as I revere Langford, Dempsey's wins for me. Also, I think Dempsey peaked at a better weight (for him) than did Langford. Dempsey would be much bigger at the weights which they would both be the strongest and in the best condition. If it were only a matter of skill, it would be very close with maybe a slight edge to Tham.
I think this would have been a terrific fight but I went with Dempsey via knockout. As tough and talented as Sam Langford was, I’m just not sure if he could take that kind of mauling.
Dempsey's erstwhile manager, John 'The Barber' Reisler, tried to make this match for Dempsey around 1916. "No way!" said Jack, saying he wasn't ready for the likes of Langford at that stage of his career. Dempsey went on to say in his autobiography that he didn't know that he could beat Langford even at his best. I believe he had a genuine respect for Langford and wasn't just saying this to be magnanimous. Dempsey's refusal to take the fight led to a fallout with Reisler and Dempsey found himself blacklisted as far as getting fights in the New York area. He went back to lumberjacking until he received a telegram from Doc Kearns and a new chapter in his life and career started. Prime for prime, a tough call to make. My gut feeling is Dempsey after a real war but I would not wager any money either way.
Prime for prime or in a certain year, as their careers did overlap? Sam would have whipped a young Dempsey but Dempsey probably would have over a blind ageing Langford.
If Dempsey is as open as he was against Brennan and Firpo I think Langford knocks him into next week. I mean it could go either way but it's either Langford stoppage or Dempsey decision. I can't see Dempsey outbrawling Langford
