No, he would be a LHW. For decades there have been day before weigh ins, & guys average near 10% less then compared to in ring weights. He would easily make LHW. Sure he could be a little bigger & the same speed with modern training. But that does not address who he really was.
Briggs is hit more than he was in last 2 fights combined. Jack would be outclassing him from the very start.
I'm disappointed in your persistence with the "knocked out of the ring" narrative despite the footage showing a push through faulty ropes. Ultimately, if you are going with the "he's smaller than Briggs" argument, that's the end of the debate for me. No point.
I don't think anyone can believe beating Shannon Briggs requires being a "superhero". I think Dempsey and a lot of other good (and not so good) fighters of that size would be able to beat Briggs. Yes, Briggs was big and punched hard. But that's really about it. He wasn't even a contender in his prime, to be honest. I'd probably favour Leon Spinks at his best to beat Briggs ..... and Marvis Frazier would be about 50-50 with him too. And I don't think either of them were as good as, or hit as hard as Dempsey. And they are far from superheroes. Briggs simply wasn't good.
An excellent post. I disagree on one point, I would make Marvis a clear favorite over the " big guy who can punch hard. " Marvis managed some actual solid wins over Bonecrusher, Tillis, Broad, and Bugner. Briggs hasn't even produced performances THAT decent. My whole issue with Magoo's argument before it became lazy "he's bigger" crap is you simply can't give Briggs a puncher's chance over everyone that has been hurt or stopped before. Especially in the case of Dempsey, who only has one suspect stoppage loss in a very long and busy career. Briggs hasn't done anything to earn to the Shavers or Rahman benefit of the doubt, except "be bigger" which btw ..didn't seem to work out for him as his stamina might be the worst I've seen for a titlist.
If Dempsey was a bit bigger he would win, but he is like 40lbs lighter than Briggs and going at someone who is naturally 40lbs heavier and also has huge punching power is a very bad idea, Briggs KO although Dempsey is the better fighter
You systematically ignore the fact that Briggs could punch and that Dempsey was KO’d by lesser men... go with it if that works for you
Dempsey was not KO'ed by lesser men than Briggs for a fact. Dempsey was only knocked out by ONE MAN in over 60 fights and I wouldn't describe him as "lesser" than perhaps one of the worst fighters to ever reach the world stage. Nor have I ignored Dempsey's KO loss to Gunboat as I've addressed it several times. You have persistently ignored my challenge to your "knocked out of the ring" claim and what the footage actually shows. If you can't distinguish the difference between a "man tumbling from a shove from an extended arm (not even a snapping punch) between poor ring ropes" and a Rahman/Oleg KO or understand why someone would see it that way, then once more, pointless. End of the debate.
Lesser by what metric, physical mass? Sure, but you systematically neglect the most salient irrefutable truth of the matter: that Briggs sucks!
