Jack Dempsey vs Vitali Klitschko

This sounds like the same hipster bemoaning of Dempsey that has been flying around the last few years.

Dempsey first of all was semi retired when he fought Tommy Gibbons. And Tommy Gibbons did earn his shot at the heavyweight title he was voted number 2 by the people to have a crack off Dempsey, just behind WIlls and just above Brennan. The shitty times they were Wills never got that shot because the politics wouldn't allow it, (You always hear the bull**** that Dempsey refused to fight Wills, he signed 3 contracts to fight him and all 3 fell through because of the politics of the time). Wills also didnt help himself by refusing an elimantor bout with Gibbons, Wills probably knew this wouldn't of made any difference to his challenge for a shot at the title. After the Demspey fight Gibbons became the number 1 contender.

Bum rushing bums, Dempsey fought approx 27 fights in the year up to Willard not including exhibitions. This included at least 18 round 1 KO's and wins over notable fighters like Carl Morris, Miske, Brennan, Jim Flynn, Gunboat Smith, Pelkey, Levinsky, Dan Flynn and number 1 contender Fred Fulton. Now some of these were passed their prime but still a pretty good resume.

Queue the one about Sam Langford and Willie Meehan.

 

At this rate Dempsey is going to end up as a lightweight!

 

Vitali fought at a snails pace, while Dempsey explodes on opponents . Vitali stopped people through accumulation of punches, he won't hit Jack enough and Dempsey will nail him often. I see Jack by TKO around 9 or 10

 

Dempsey is a legend but Vitali would be too tall and too heavy for Dempsey, Vitali would win by points or maybe by knockout...

Agreed. A 6'1, 77" reach Jack Dempsey would be too small to beat Klitschko. Only a giant like the 6'2, 77" reach Lamon Brewster or 6'1, 74" reach Chris Byrd can do that.

I think it plays out like the Sanders fight. But I think Dempsey def catches him a lot more and tests that chin. There is def a slight chance Dempsey makes Vitali quit with arm shots or cuts but barring that it’s Vitali by KO

 

The bottomline is that Dempsey never beat anyone remotely like Vitali in terms of big man skills and big man physical ability.

The Jess Willard comparison is, at best, intellectually lazy, and more likely, purposely dishonest. Vitali faced guys of equal and greater power, better skill, better physical attributes. No question.

To support the argument that Dempsey wins is based on speculation as to how Dempsey would against a calibre of opponent he never faced.

I don't see Vitali going the distance either. Dempsey would not last. He's too easy to hit, was Ko'd in 1 round by a washed up guy, down several times in other fights, rocked badly by Jack Sharkey and whipped twice by Tunney. NO fights with Greb or Wills...Dempsey could have made either if he really wanted to.

Tunney was his best opponent. After that maybe Sharkey whom he fouled while getting it handed to him to win was the other.

 

I can only see Dempsey getting worn down by Vitali here. Can't see any other outcome assuming no injuries to either fighter. Although he's not technically great, Vitali has an awkward style and he uses his length and height well. I think you need to be close to him in dimensions (like Lewis) to beat him. Yes, I know he withdrew against Byrd (a mistake) but Dempsey won't be able to apply his style onto to Vitali and he will be ground down for a late rounds TKO or UD.
