:thumbsup - That said, I would probably edge towards Dempsey in this match up. He has the head movement to give Wlad probems in trying to control the fight with his jab, and quick enough feet to close the gap and give Wlad further difficulties in establishing his range. Because he can close the gap, I think Wlad will have to keep shifting his feet to establish the range and show more lateral movement than usual, which will keep him a little off-balance and stop him from setting his feet and landing hard-right hands and left-hooks. Even though Wlad has a clear advantage in size, I don't think he can rely on tieing Dempsey up on the inside. Chambers displayed a level of strength in lifting Wlad clean off the canvas, and Dempsey had deceptive strength and a real killer-instinct and aggression combined with that speed and slippery head-movement, I think if Wlad has to tie up often, Dempsey may be able to get some punches in before he does so. That said, he was also patient in finding his spots and would not just rush in giving Wlad ample time to find his target. I think he would struggle early on with Wlad's size and excellent all-round jab, but remain patient in looking for his opportunities and in trying to figure out a way past it. Eventually, I think he starts to time Wlad's jab and use a combination of his footwork and head movement to get himself inside Wlad's reach, and start hitting wearing him down for a round or two with a well-executed body attack, before he head-hunts and finds his target with some crunching left-hooks, Wlad picking himself up off the canvas twice before he's finally stopped on his feet around round 7 or 8 with him in big trouble after more shots find their target.
Better to blow smoke out of my "pie hole",than a thinking man's mouth...Have you seen Buddy Baer, aside from the films with Joe Louis? Well Buddy Baer was 6.6" hit very hard, was more mobile than Klitschko, and sported a record of 46 kos in 59 bouts..Buddy Baer kod amongst others Abe Simon, Natie Mann, Tony Galento etc...He came along when the immortal Brown Bomber reigned, and would have been very successful today, against the likes of a robotic fighter like Klitschko, methinks....
Buddy couldn't hold a candle to Wlad in terms of technical skill and that's where the difference lies.
Wlad has Carneras skill and Buddys power, which is actualy a prety potent combination. He dosn't have eithers chin however.
agree 100% with this - at the end of the day however much Vlad might have improved as a fighter since Sanders, the fact is you can't train a chin he's still got the same chin he had then - and at some point (not too long into the fight IMO) Dempsey is going to hit it and the same thing that happened against Sanders will happen (albeit a lot more painfully) - really this whole debate is laughable to me as is the Vlad Vs Sonny Liston thread i spotted earlier on Classic - we must've had a pretty crappy history if someone like Vlad Klitschko can defeat some of histories deadliest fighters for christs sake!!! atsch
Wlad is on a level clear above Carnera. I watched Carnera get outboxed easily by larry gains and jack sharkey suffering wide decision losses. That would never ever happen to Wlad against a sub 200lber. Come on, Carnera is very crude compared to Wlad. Carnera's jab was a push, he couldn't really hit hard for his size, his techinque was very sloppy, and his accuracy was awful. He didn't really know how to utilize his size and control the fight from the outside either. Good fighter, but nowhere near an elite superheavyweight talent like bowe, lennox, or Wlad.
you COULD train a chin, like make some more weight in your legs to help you take the impact, or do some neck exercises but Wladimir is not going to take a Dempsey left hook.
Wladimir is technically better than Primo Carnera was, and may hit a little harder, but Primo has him in the chin and heart departments. I believe, in a head to head match, it would be an interesting fight. While it's true that Jack Sharkey outpointed him, Primo won by knockout in the rematch. While it's true that Primo developed his skills slowly, in his prime, he was not the big, untalented oaf that many today believe he was.
Sharkey was way out of shape when the rematch took place. His body went from rock solid muscle in the late 1920s, to soft marshmellow due to lack of training by 1933. Besides, I still wonder if Jack Sharkey took a dive in that fight. Carnera couldn't knock a sick infant off a potty seat.
How did Carnera have him in the chin department? Every puncher Carnera fought put him down. many (Baer, Louis, Haynes) knocked him out. Sharkey put him down for 9 with 1 punch in their first fight. Also how does he have Wlad in heart? When did Wlad ever show a lack of heart? he got up from every knockdown he ever suffered. he never quit in a fight either.
Emphasis = mine: If you really believe that, there isn't much anyone can say about boxing in the 30's that will make much sense to you.
I happen to be a huge fan of heavyweight boxing in the 30s. here are a list of the following fighters i have studied Joe Louis, Max Schmeling, Jack Sharkey, Max Baer, Primo Carnera, Jim Braddock, George Godfrey, Jersey Joe Walcott, Tiger Jack Fox, Leroy Haynes, Jack Trammell, Eddie Blunt, Willie Reddish, Lorenzo Pack, John Henry Lewis, Larry Gains, Tiger Warrington, Otis Thomas, Obie Walker, Rosco Toles, Gunnar Barland, Charlie Retzleff, Lee Ramage, Stanley Poreda, Adolph Wiater, Lee Savold, Patsy Perroni, Natie Brown, Steve Hamas, Walter Neusal, Hank Hankinson, Gus Dorazio, Nathan Mann, Tommy Far, Len Harvey, Lou Nova, Bob Pastor, Johnny Paycheck, Red Burman, Ernie Schaff, Tommy Loughran, Tony Galento, Abe Simon, Buddy Baer, Johnny Risko, al ettore. I am speaking the truth on my opinion of Carnera. He wasn't a great fighter. He was a good one. I won't go any further than that. Wlad is head and shoulders above him.
