I don't think they were. I saw a picture of Dempsey on his way into the ring w/o gloves only wraps, and they seemed normal. I know they could have been loaded and then wrapped over with gauze. I don't buy into this story because I've also heard that it was a piece of iron that he held in his hand, Ferdie Pacheco mentioned this in his book about the 12 greatest rounds from a few years ago. I think Dempsey hit like a tank and he threw lots of punches. I always felt Dempsey fought ahead of his time, out of a crouch, head movement, and lots of heavy punches. A fighter standing straight up would be made to order.
Do a search on the half a dozen threads regarding this. In short, it sounds like a bunch of bull****, likely started by a bitter, spurned Jack Kearns years later.
Yes CP, it has just been established that Dempsey hid an anchor of a Naval battleship in his left hand...haven't you heard ? To repeat ad nausem this drivel belittles ESB...Dempsey's 2 hands WERE loaded...With ten fingers...:deal
The following link gives a very good and thorough analysis of the situation http://coxscorner.tripod.com/dempsey_gloves.html
Dempsey ducked Wills and Greb....used loaded gloves because he had a soft punch and illegally boarded many trains in his day.....A horrible individual!
Little known fact: a very sick Jack Dempsey hoboed around the country from California to New York spreading the disease we would later call Spanish Influenza. This was after he killed the Archduke Franz Ferdinand but before a drunken binge with Woodrow Wilson lead to prohibition. His insistence on starting a bar lead to its repeal, as he wanted a watering hole to take advantage of the Depression he started in '29 after tanking some bad investment (Dempsey had been practicing bankrupting people for some time; see the Shelby incident). Many contended that his bad investments were merely karmic justice; in 1914 women were supposed to gain the right to vote along with African Americans but Dempsey filibustered (the infamous 'Dames lead to Doom' speech) successfully keeping womens suffrage out for another half decade. Also be probably should have fought Harry Wills.
As long as he's not redundant LR.:good P.S. LR. I attended Dempsey's services after he died, and many of the ESB posters gave their eulogy opinions stating one after another how vile a person Dempsey was. The minister after hearing from 5 or so ESB guests shouted," isn't there anyone hear who could say something nice about Dempsey at this service " ?. Someone from the audience stuck up his hand and shouted " yes, his brother was worse "...atschatschatsch
I'm starting to find this question as tedious as the "Ali-Foreman fight being fixed" one !!!!! Dempsey beat Willard - fair and square.
You've forgotten the most signifigant thing here. When Dempsey conspired with Muhammad Ali to get control of Ewing Oil. Kristin Sheperd took the rap for shooting JR but Ali and Dempsey were seen hanging around JR's office earlier in the day.
