Ya i was thinking that myself, the fact that he never defended against a black fighter was more due to the boxing politics at the time.If he defended against black fighters that would damage his marketability and possibly ruin his career.I never once read or heard Dempsey say or do anything racist

Dempsey suffered a series of strokes in his early 80's which effected his ability to speak ... considering the length of his career and the number of bouts he fought it is amazing that he was as healthy as he was ... in the interviews I've seen of him pushing 70 (Ali-Liston 2) he sounded terrific.

nothing so quaint as fat, self-satisfied 21st century liberalism sitting in judgement of illiterate 19th century folks who grew up starving in mining camps.

well..i think that it was a different time....many whites and blacks felt that whites and blacks where more different then we would feel is correct today..having said that...i never seen any evidence that dempsey excluded black people as friends..the only thing he didnt do was fight them as champ...now that was likely due to his promoter not wanting the problems...and also due to the fact that it was high risk for lower reward....the guy sparred with blacks...he fought blacks before he won the title..i dont think he would have had a moral problem himself giving a black fighter a title shot.

I'm not talking about Dempsey, from what I know he seems a decent man. The revisionist talk of 'it was a different time and racial abuse is fine and acceptable' argument is pretty sickening though. I dont think Dempsey had a moral problem fighting blk fighters, I think he was happy to take advantage of fighting weaker opposition though

While Jack Dempsey would be seen as a racist by todays standards he probably did not consider himself to be such.

He was friends with a number of black fighters and even gave money to suport Sam Langford when he was old and blind.

I see no reason why he could not have formed a friendship with Mike Tyson.

Well...at that point in history blacks really didnt dominate heavyweight boxing....so i would say he was really avoiding any worthy black fighter other then willis..the idea that Johnson or a super old Langford would have been a treat doesnt hold water. But yes he should have fought willis..and i feel dempsey would have been totally willing to have the fight.

As for your point..yes your correct...and the idea that different times gives a excuse is actually a type of moral realtivism that conservatives should be aganist. and the fact is...their where people of that time who where white and also non racist...people in the abolitionist movement for example...many of them where poor famers.

so the fact is some poor white people avoided being racist...so that means one cannot totally excuese those who where racist.

How do you think the HW champion versions of Dempsey and Tyson would have gotten along socially?
