119 (94 ko)-5-5 (4ND) https://streamable.com/cpdq Was going through some old footage and came across that. I also heard a few months back while watching another Dempsey clip that he had 148 fights and won 108 by ko. The clip I added said 134 total fights. That means if we add 14 knockouts to his record he has 148 total fights winning 133 (108ko).
well tbh back in those days you could just say you had x amount of fights and it would be hard to disprove...ill trust boxrec for Dempseys record
Why? Other fighters lied, all the time, or their managers did on their behalf. Especially about losses. It was certainly as common as guys who had hundreds of fights, more so.
Source? Btw the only black heavyweights who were quality in those days wouldn't have made it halfway through a fight with Dempsey. The only exception is Langford. He could fight a 50/50 fight with Dempsey.
Such as??? It wasn't Dempsey in the video claiming that he had 148 fights. It doesn't make sense anyway that Dempsey only fought 83 fights over a course of a 13 year career. He was in the same boat as other fighters, hungry and willing to fight anyone willing to get in the ring regardless of weight.
Pretty much all of 'em at some point or another. Of course it's complicated by the fact that a lot of fighters and a lot of papers weren't given to recounting someone's ND contests, or the NWS contests. But you'd have to be an astonishingly bad promoter to report six losses your fighter had as a teenager under an alias in Texas seen by few and reported only locally for your guy's NY debut. It would be almost criminal to admit to those losses.
Dempsey fought under the name Kid Blackie as well. It is more than likely that there are unreported fights not listed on boxrec.
Jack won the title in1919 ,I think Sam was well past his best by then. Prior to the 1917 fight with Fulton in which his eye was badly damaged Langford would have been a handful for anyone.
I doubt Dempsey knew how many fights in bars, cellars etc he engaged in. He probably had more wins ,and possibly a few losses than are recorded.
its not unheard of but its more than double the amount of fights on his official record. Dempsey lived quite a long life and I have never found any mention of these additional 70 fights in any interviews, Ring Mag, boxrec, or even from Bert Sugar... not to say that these sources are end-all-be-all but for none of them to come forward with these statistics seems a bit odd for such a high profile fighter as Dempsey. Bert Sugar (who i cant stand btw) had the audacity to rate Jack Dempsey #2 all time at HW...so you can best believe if there were 70 fights missing off his official record Sugar would be beating thay drum loud and proud another thing to consider: im not 100% sure but i dont think sound was available on film throughout any time during Dempseys career, most of the clips ive seen of him are voiced over from later dates i will say I have heard about the Kid Blackie claim before, although I was unaware that this included fights not already on Dempseys record...if anyone has a record link i would be intetested in seeing
