I've remembered reading a blog last year that stated unlike Teddy Atlas(Punchers are born),Jack Dempsey actually believe that a person can improve his punching power through various training methods and stated that he himself was an example of a puncher that didn't have any natural punching power when he first started.

Is this true? I mean does Jack Dempsey ever quoted saying/wrote something like that? If it is true then what are your thoughts about this?

You can learn how to use angles/your body and train the muscles needed the most for those movements.

the thing is when you train to throw a good single punch, alot of people will have one punch power...

when your an amature/novice street fighter and you go all out.. 900 punches later you havent thrown a single good punch with good form.

i think most natural heavy hitters are born with thicker shoulders (dont get it mistaked with broad) and natural good form, ofc musle fibers and heavy hands play a part.

i for instance used to go balls to the wall with no single good punches, after i read dempseys book, and started to learn how to throw a punch properly i have since then knocked some people out.

Benny leonard started his career as a very fast boxer devoid of punching power , but developed in his second career into a great accurate two-handed puncher... so did Tommy Hearns start his amateur career as a tall boxer but soon developed as a pro
into a murderous two handed puncher....Timing, timing, timing, and accuracy can be developed...

Natural instinct probably also plays a part.

Read Jack Dempsey's classic book Championship boxing. In my opinion the best book ever written on developing punching power. Jack does say in the book that a person can become a powerful puncher through proper training. On an additional interesting note Dempsey's drop step has mechanics not unlike the strikes of a famous Chinese internal fighting style called Hsing i, Known for its powerful punches.

punching power has always confused me. at first i figured you could build it, just like strength, a skinny kid could sweat and bleed into a powerlifting monster, so a featherfisted puncher could develope into a heavy handed slugger. however i now doubt it. mainly because a lot of gym rats have very unimpressive punching power and a lot of guys known for laying off the hard training (tyson, ketchel, foreman in his youth) all had sickening power. i mean compare holyfield and tyson - who trained harder? who hit harder? compare tim bradley and maidana - who trains harder? who hits harder? i think, for some unexplainable reason, probably to do with tendons, kinetic chains, transferring power in certain ways, that some dudes can hit hard and other cant. you cant TRAIN julian jackson power, thats for damn sure
