This is in the build up to the Louis-Godoy rematch.

Dempsey got into the ring, "the first time he had been in the ring [in public] since he boxed a round each with Baer and Schmeling before their fight...Godoy, fighting in an upright position for a change, reddened Dempsey's face with a few short jolts and one Jack caught Godoy with a back hand lick that sent Godoy reeling."

Dempsey had supposedly warned Goody "to lay off the old stomach" before they got into the ring.

    Dempsey still had it :D

Straight to the dirty tactics though when Godoy showed form :D

I take it Dempsey never got into the ring with Louis, even for a play?

All the great champs could hit like mfk'ers....that was the reason they were champs.

I wouldn't count any of them out in a round robin against each other.

Looks like he back hand ***** slapped the referee across the ring. Wish there was more footage.

On a serious note... Despite my logical and rigorously intellectual analysis of Dempsey's career, he was a total bad ass. He's the 70 old guy who would fight at the drop of a hat (as two NYC muggers discovered) and he had a left that could level a house.

The complete game in boxing is oversold, especially in the heavy division. What you really need is a couple emphatic strengths. For Dempsey that was power and aggression, at least in his best performances.

I may not pick him to win every match up but perhaps more than almost any other heavy I would never discount his chances in any matchup.

Excellent film clip - really enjoyed watching it!

I'm not aware of Dempsey and Louis getting together in a ring for any purpose except for pre-fight introductions. It would have been great to see, though, even if it were a skit. I remember reading of Dempsey training some up and coming fighters who did not do well against Louis, and he was quoted as saying he wanted to train someone to fight Louis, but hadn't thought that it might be Dempsey, himself. This may have been said more in humor than anything else. I do remember seeing a film of Dempsey and Louis flanking either Bob Hope or Frank Sinatra. Dempsey took one arm, Louis the other and they lifted the guy off the ground and carried him off.

Dempsey got in the ring with Louis at Joe's training camp for the Schmeling rematch when word was Joe was flat and listless ... Jack actually yelled at him to get some **** and vinegar back or told him he would lose ... there are photos of this camp visit ... they did not spar but they were in the ring and Jack was holding him and showing him how to fight nasty like he did ...

Two weeks after sparring with Godoy, Dempsey was in the ring again.

    I believe the story.

(I don't know he clearly stated it, as far as I know it could just have been another nice little made-up newspaper story - a lot of what is in the papers are just made-up stories - but I choose to believe it, even on my limited knowledge of it.)

Wonder of wonders i agree with your analysis...A will to conquer and destroy no matter what, goes a long way, and this mental toughness was what Jack Dempsey HAD in spades...:good
