Frazier was a class above Dempsey as a fighter

Honestly I think Dempsey and Frazier are pretty close. I have to ask, was Dempsey really considered the best heavyweight of all time. I thought that just about everyone from that era, like Fleischer, had Jack Johnson ahead of him.

I think the 70's Duran is pretty close temperament wise.

joe's resume, though shorter, certainly lines up well with dempsey's. and his top wins (especially the FOTC) are well ahead of dempsey's. i wouldn't say they're on different levels but frazier is clearly ahead of dempsey all time imo

dempsey was good. its a pity because a lot of people underrate the guy. his destruction of willard was awesome.

That's the only link I could find. There's a few others out there.

LR, you are correct...Nat Fleischer always had Jack Johnson no.1 as a heavyweight...But in the 1950s polls 200 or so boxing writers had Jack Dempsey as the best heavyweight by a large majority with Joe Louis at no.2...
I have always felt that the young hungry Jack Dempsey's snarling temperment was a bigger and earlier edition of the later vicious Roberto Duran...They both fought like some opponent took their wallet...Two peas in the pod...
