I know, I know, I think so too, but keep this in mind - these would likely be the two best HW's that Dempsey had ever beaten, and arguably the best he had ever faced. In Schmeling, he faces a fighter who is often compared to Tunney in terms of generalship, and in Patterson he is facing one of the few fighters who is faster and more explosive in terms of handspeed. Both have been dispatched very quickly by great punchers, I know, but what do you think about their chances versus Dempsey? Have BOTH beaten better fighters than Dempsey managed to beat? If you pick Dempsey over both, who do you think has the best chance?
I really don't think Patterson has a chance but his speed was slightly better than Jack but I think Jack's early pressure is the kiss of death for Floyd...Schmeling may have had the better chance because of his style but the Baer fight indicates a KO loss to Dempsey as well
Both have good chances, both are technically allot better than Dempsey and are straighter sharper punches. Patterson has a big speed advantage too, Schmelling's counter right is probably as good as Tunney's People will likely pick up on Patterson's losses, the 2 he couldn't beat were much bigger men than Dempsey so Patterson would not be overawed in the same way. Dempsey himself has near prime losses to Flynn, Meehan and arguably Miske, none quite at the level of Patterson. Patterson may well be the best puncher Dempsey ever faced, combining power, accuracy and speed. He would also be arguably the most complete boxer. I can certainly see a scenario Schmelling is the type of counter puncher I certainly see giving Dempsey nightmares, there are the similarities with Tunney and the win over Prime Louis was a masterclass from Schmelling. I wouldn't make a firm pick on either, yes Dempsey can KO both but both can also KO Jack and there sharper shooting may see that happening
They'd make entertaining fights for sure, but Dempsey should be the firm favourite in each case. Schmeling and Patterson may very well buzz Dempsey, but Jack's career teaches us that his powers of recovery and staying power were top notch. The idea of Max or Floyd standing over Dempsey is a hard one to picture. Schmeling should be the one deemed to have the better chance; with his crunching right and patience he has a fair blueprint to try to simmer n' trouble a fighter like Dempsey, but taking in all the factors, it's a flawed plan.

This is basically where I'm at. I just think that Dempsey is too explosive for Floyd, he slugs too much and I see him getting caught by left hooks and right hands. Would be an incredible fight though. Schmeling could do it like Tunney did, but even then I see a younger title run Jack running him over somewhat.
In Schmeling's autobiography published in Germany, Max called Jack Dempsey the best heavyweight he ever saw...Schmeling as a young boxer sparred with Dempsey when Dempsey visited Germany..I read the book a couple of years ago from the New York Public Library...A great read....
Seeing Schmeling standed over Joe Louis was a hard one to swallow, but it happen. In boxing, you just never know.
Floyd Patterson has beating better fighters than Dempsey has. Schemling doesn't have as good depth but he has the better single win. I think Dempsey is too ferocious and tough for Patterson. Stylistically, it makes for an interesting fight for a few rounds but Dempsey has a stronger mind, is more aggressive, and the sturdier fighter. Schemling vs Dempsey is an interesting fight, but I worry that Schemling lacks the mobility to beat Dempsey. I think Tunney's mobility bothered Dempsey as much as his handspeed and straight punches did. Besides, that was hardly the best Dempsey. Tunney gave the necessary angles when he counter-punched. Schemling doesn't control the ring like that and would like get taking out or overcome by Dempsey's body-punching. It didn't take technique to beat Schemling. If you had toughness and were rough and powerful you could take him out like Baer had. Consider this... a 30 year old Sharkey beat Schemling in a controversial and close fight. Dempsey past his prime KOed Sharkey in an also controversial and close fight. Sharkey claimed Dempsey hit harder than Louis and although Sharkey was doing well before being stopped against Dempsey he was still in a bruising fight where Dempsey's body-punching was beginning to take dividends on Sharkey. I think this tells us something and Sharkey from my understanding praised Dempsey. Regardless of the controversial KO he was likely turning the fight and would've stopped Sharkey anyhow. In conclusion, I think Dempsey was just better than Schemling.
Dempsey KO's both ... neither man had the package necessary to defeat him ... Patterson simply could not take his power. Schmeling was too slow and hittable ..
