Louis v Schmeling 2 was on 22nd June 1938.America entered the war or rather was dragged into it on December the 7th 1941, when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbour , 3 and a half years later. Of course WW 2 really began on September the 1st 1939!Over 2 years before America entered it!lol Roosevelt never made that remark or "something very close to it ,"its a total fabrication as Randy Roberts states in his autobiography of Louis which I have just finished. There is no justification for anyone to state that Johnson wanted Schmeling to win either of his bouts with Louis. Johnson had spotted that Louis did not return his left to the guard position after jabbing and predicted that Schmeling , being a great right hand puncher would be able to take advantage of this fault Schmeling had also spotted this flaw when watching films of Louis,"I see somethings, but I won't tell ".Its actually on film ! Johnson offered to coach Louis on the condition that Roxborough and Black dispensed with the services of Jack Blackburn, they disliked each other. They refused and Louis lost the first fight to Schmeling because of a combination of that flaw and his own overconfidence and refusal to train properly,he spent much of his time playing gold and pursuing" hairy pie "around the camp. Johnson trained and coached George Godfrey and Kid Cotton, both black fighters and often hyped them up to the press. Johnson rooted for Louis to beat Carnera and verified quotes he made in support of The Brown Bomber can be found in Pollack's biography of Johnson.Johnson went on the stump campaigning for black politicians and white ones he felt could help the black population such as Wendell Wilkie, whom Louis also supported. Sam Langford and Joe Jeannette black contemporaries of Johnson , were both loudly vociferous in their support of Jim Jeffries, billed as," The Great Undefeated White Champion Of Champions",when he came back to fight Johnson ,and they were roundly castigated by the black community when Jeffries proved to be an abysmal failure in that fight. Langford actually coached Jack Sharkey to beat Harry Wills! Jeannette trained many white fighters, including Jim Braddock. Anything wrong with either of their actions? Your pathetic attempt to teach me history must be counted a dismal failure I am afraid. I recommend you read the following: " Joe Louis," by Randy Roberts " Joe Louis," by Richard Bak "The Greatest Fight Of Our Generation Louis v Schmeling" ,by Lewis Erenberg "Joe Louis", by Chris Mead. "Joe Louis My Life,"by Joe Louis. When you have done so, you might actually know WTF you are talking about, which will be a first! ps" O Brien didn't have a good reach"? Care to tell us what it was? I know you don't know!
This content is protected This gibberish is hard to read. Are you taking Randy Roberts word? ! Keep in mind he says Johnson QUIT vs.Klondike. I have seen Roberts speak, he's more of a professor type than boxing historian. A liberal story teller. WRONG, Rosevelt did say that to Joe Louis. Many are aware of it This content is protected It wasn't a fight between two men; it was a battle of ideologies. https://nmaahc.si.edu/blog-post/joe-louis The rest of your stuff doesn't mean anything to this topic. Your spraying odd facts and acting like that means something. It's a waste to time, but do get back to be if you think Roberts is right on Johnson quitting, I doubt you will! You are 100% guilty of cherry picking stuff from books and denying what you don't like. Johnson quit several times in boxing ring fights. Johnson ripped Joe Louis. We've seen it in the press before. Who cares if Johnson wanted Louis to beat Primo, many in boxing did not care for the foreign born heavyweight. Johnson was not i serious about coaching Louis, it was a dig at Blackburn, get a clue! Johnson tried to disrupt Louis corner and said thing sin the press to rips Louis stand and style. Every wonder why so many of the black fighters of the time disliked Johnson? Yes O'brien who did not have a great reach out jabbed Johnson. The press says so! I suggest you read the papers to see what his listed reach was, and while you are at it, for the 10th time tell me what the purse was in Jack Johnson vs Battling Johnson, as you said you knew! BS, the purse is a mystery. You lied. Give us a number. Calling you out yet again. Infact your multiple alt's have said different things. Why did you do this? And what exactly did you get banned for, and return on the 4th? I do not recall a post by Mcvey that lead to this. Do tell, and admit it was one of your many alts. Johnson was 2 inches talker and probably had 40 pounds on him. O'brien who had little power created blood in Johnson's mouth. Just imagine what Joe Louis jab would do. As for Johnson, some of the black intellectuals of the time didn't like him. We have been over this before.
Johnson had a great skill set for his time but Walcott would have been even more dominant than Johnson if we could back him into that era. I think Johnson could present some confusion but no version of Jack Johnson could survive a prime Joe Louis who in my opinion was the greatest heavyweight and the greatest example of punching form balance and combination punching that comes to mind.

You've produced nothing to counter my post.and you won't because for some one as bigoted and fixated on Johnson ,you are incredibly ill informed on the subject. You are a singular example of some ones' hate destroying their objectivity on a subject. You told us O Brien did not have a great reach . I asked you what his reach was? I know you haven't a clue . Prove me wrong, post it! You won't because you haven't any idea! Your phobic hatred has once again exposed you as the********** you are. No big deal ,everyone knows the strength of you on this subject , and treats your posts accordingly.
You can see one of the exhibitions on YouTube. Well worth watching, as Johnson reads a prepared speech before the “fight” and his voice is nothing like what I would have expected.
In CornerMen (Great Boxing Trainers) In the chapter on Jack Blackburn it is interesting. Publically Blackburn states in a UPI report "Joe Louis would whip Jack Johnson sure. We would not be afraid to take him on were Johnson in his prime. Johnson was a defensive fighter. He would fool around until you made a mistake and then pop you. Louis would get him first." In private, however, Blackburn seems to have taken the opposite view. Louis boyhood friend Freddie Guinyard who became Louis secretary and traveling companion recalls Blackburn told him that Johnson would have defeated Louis. "Blackburn and I were roommates. While at camp Guinyard says "Jack Blackburn and I had twin beds. I was on one side of the room and he was on the other. We would go to bed at 9 or 10. For two old streetwise characters that was a bit early so we would lay there and talk for a long time. He told me. "Young man Jack Johnson would have whipped Joe Louis earlocks off. Because he is a standin target Jack Johnson was a moving target." Blackburn sparred with Johnson and fought Gans 3 times and Langford 6 times. Legend has it Gans said that Blackburn was the only man he refused to defend his title against.
Clinch-box wouldn't work on Louis. You need to be a seek n destroyer type or a boxer mover type. I feel clinchy guys like Johnson and WK would get blown out by Louis. They spent too much time in the wheelhouse working the clinch , that gives Louis amble opportunity to send in his power blows. I think both fall , but WK would probably fall first due to his shaky chin. I sometimes wonder if WK studied the Jack Johnson tapes..Hmmm.
A small guy like Johnson with no reach clinch-boxing Louis isn't going to work, for sure. A monster like Wlad, the most dominant super heavy of all time and a master craftsman of control-boxing, would have other advantages. And Wlad had and ATG heavyweight jab, subtle, multi-directional, off-speed, on-speed, nuanced. I'm glad we agree.
