Well, I haven't read what anyone has posted, but I looked up the text of the Mann Act. The relevant section refers to transporting from a foreign country, and across territorial or state lines-- "any woman or girl for the purposes of prostitution or debauchery, or for any other immoral purpose, or with the intent and purpose to induce, entice, or compel such woman or girl to become a prostitute or to give herself up to debauchery, or to engage in any immoral practice," I lived back when a teenager only a few miles from the Mississippi, so we often took dates across the river, and so into another state, to a movie or dance hall. I have to say off this definition myself and most of the other boys violated the Mann Act or at least attempted to. I'm not a lawyer, but this seems to me to be a wildly poorly written law. Such vague terms as "debauchery" and "immoral purpose." dictionary definition of debauchery--"excessive indulgence in sexual pleasure" "immoral purpose"--I am certain everyone will agree on what this is.
I'm conflicted. It's nice the issue is buried now, but I'm pretty sure he was in fact a pimp, which is what the Mann act got him for in the first place. It seems like a law with a ton of loopholes to trump up charges when it was convenient politically to do so, but that Jack was also guilty. It's kinda like when a guy gets unfairly racially profiled today but winds up having drugs in his car nonetheless. I think it's interesting they busted Charlie Chaplin on the Mann Act, too. Being black at the time certainly didn't help Jack's cause, but I don't think he would've been in the clear if he were white as it relates to the charges, either....boxers, even popular ones, weren't untouchable targets by any means. Mostly forgotten today is that Jack Dempsey himself got taken to trial for draft dodging in 1920.
I think there are better people to Pardon than Johnson but this was a bogus charge and has been a big issue for several years. Well Done
I am Happy he was pardoned, there is a justice system but not always ruled fairly for everyone in fact many people who are in prison or not in prison is based on the power of the people who want or dont want them in prison. Johnson was cocky and arogant and broke the norm of the time so he fanned the flames against him but no reason for him to be unjustly imprisoned or his name tarnished. He is free
Our goverment chased Jack Johnson out of the country. I dont think he was guilty of that crime. The truth is they wanted to get rid of his smile. That smile sent whitey sideways. I'm glad he was pardoned.
normally you'd ask what a politician is trying to deflect from by doing this kind of thing, but in trumps case its a deflection from everything else to do with trump. i would guess that the fines johnson paid have yet to be returned to his family. same old shyt we've heard from their politicians "i pardon u, but pyss down your bak look its raining"
The Pardon was long overdue. The entire Congress voted a recommendation to the president to pardon Johnson several years ago. The Mann Act itself is so poorly written I think it is absurd, as I posted earlier. Also, it certainly appears this was an ex post facto conviction, in clear violation of our Constitution.
Was does his alleged promiscuity have to do with anything? He drove women across stateliness for what specifically?
This is something a bit new to me in article form, I hope you enjoy it. Please feel free to correct me on anything, I got a splinter an inch into my nail bed today and writing this has been very Painful. I hope it was worth it. https://imgur.com/gallery/i9zhnvW
