That's why I have him at #5. He beat a lot of the top black fighters and then had 6 title defenses of the HW title. I feel he should have fought for a title a lot earlier than he did.

 

His resume is abysmal. Highly overrated. Best wins were smaller fighters, washed up has-beens, and novices. McVey and Jeannette had less than 10 and 20 fights respectively when he fought them. Fitz was washed up, Jeffries washed up, Ketchel a MW, Langford was 156 pounds and only 20 years old. He drew the color line as champion and only made one exception, Battling Jim Johnson who Jeannette had beaten twice that same year. He demanded $30K if the top black opponents wanted to fight him yet only accepted $1,000 to fight Battling Jim. He's not in my top 30.

Number 1 for biggest nuts and smashing women that made conservative blokes cry. What's funny is most of his haters in boxing forums today are still mad at his sexual exploits

I mean just to clarify point 1, he put a bag over his face to fight 10 or 20 men he couldn't see. And also attempted to mate with women, when he knew many men would want to lynch for it. And after all of that, he'd stroke his meat on the way to the ring.

Also Ali and Frazier had a conversation before they fought where they both had Jack Johnson as the best HW of all time. Take that for what you will. It's in 1 of Ali's biographies from the 70s

Your right there was an unofficial color line but he was a great fighter and doggedly haunted whoever was the champion including Jim Jeffries and finally provoked Tommy Burns into fighting him.
