Thanks. I've had a look and not been able to find them, but early fights in someone's record normally are harder to find, so I wouldn't really expect to. I'd rather have more evidence, but IMO they're probably legit. Boxrec is a bit inconsistant, as a few fighters have fights that are just referenced in later newspapers, like the Griffin-Childs fight "Exact date unknown. This fight was listed in Griffin's record in the Oakland Tribune." And there's meant to be a decent few of Wilde's fights from a pamphlet listing his fights, according to someone he did a load of research into him.

A Tut Nolan fought for the Aus Heavyweight title at about the same time as McVey's early fights, so I'd guess Mike Nolan was related.

Thanks for the report in case the link dies

I'm not sure you can use his ineffectiveness against Johnson against McVea being a good win, as it could just be that Johnson was that effective at neutralising him. He was being highly touted if you look at the newspapers on him I posted, and had a good win over Denver Ed Martin

    Good find.

This web site is gold. I'm going to have some fun with it today.

Mcvey was crude in prime vs Jeannette on film many years later. A left clubber only.

Sam Mcvey must have been a standing punching bag as a teenager vs Johnson. Sam Langford once said McVey had bow like arms and could not jab.

I don't think anyone claimed he was a master boxer, but he was strong and powerfull, and highly regarded from a young age. Look at the reports I posted.

Strong for sure! Fairly durable. One thing that slightly disappointed me about Sam Mcvey was he wasn't as tough as he look, retreating when Battling Jim landed, and in news articles complaining to the referee instead of using his fists in some fights.

After reading press clippings about bouts for the "colored HW champ" belt, I'm amazed that the Alphabet boxing organizations haven't split all the belts into ethnic groups. Think of all the belts and therefore all the fees they could charge boxers!

I remember you stating he didnt like it when the going got tough.Thats why he quit after all those rounds against Jeannette and could no longer see.
Johnson beat the **** out of him in their third fight ,yet he kept coming till he was ko'd in the 20th and last round.
    Yellow all through!lol
How pathetic is it your hatred of Johnson means you have to denigrate his opponents ,really ,really, sad.
