Joe Jeannette NWS? win over Sam McVea

THE NEW YORK TIMES. Tuesday, April 16, 1907

    BOXING AT THE NATIONAL
Ten-Round Bout at Lyric Hall Without Police Interferance.
The second show of the National Sporting Club of America at Lyric Hall last night brought out a large number of members despite the fact that there were plenty of rumours that the contest would be stopped by the police. There were hld as scheduled.
The main event brought together together two colored heavyweight, Joe Jeanette of New York and Sam McVey of Los Angeles, who was Jim Jeffries first opponent.
They met in a ten-round bout, and at the experiation of the contest the honors went to Jeanette. It was an interesting encourter, punctuated with many telling blows and a good show of science. McVey weighed about 208 pounds, while Jeanette scaled at least 185 pounds.
Jeanette wae speedier on his feet, and resorted to long-range work. McVey, on the other hand, scored at close quarters, depending on a right swing and a right drive for the wind.
McVey looked like the winner in the second round. After mixing it McVey countered with the right. Then Jeannette tried to shift, and as he did so McVey hit him and brought him to his knees.
At the end of the bout McVey's face was puffed and bruised and his right eye was cut. Ho was also bleeding from the mouth.
The preliminary bouts were six rounds each. "Tommy" Shay and "Joe" Palmer drew, "Tommy" Carroll bested "Eddie" Gardner, and "Jack" Moore lost to "Tommy" Allen.

Have you ever heard of Frank Slavin? Or Joe Butler? These are two known fighters in the 1890's. Armstrong beat them.

Johnson beat who from 1894-1898? You tell me, then we can compare who had the better victories in the timeline.

I'll be waiting....and please no off tangent / switch the subject tactics.

I asked who Johnson beat up to 1898. You come back with junk. As I mentioned Armstrong, who could hit some has some nice wins.

Armstrong also beat Martin just in case you forgot. IMO Armstong vs. Johnson in 1898 is 50/50.

None of these are top names, try again, you just might be right one day!

By the way Johnson is listed to losing to Thompson who weighed between 133-145 pounds :)

Johnson was 16 years old in 1894 you muppet! What do you think he weighed for the Thompson fight!
Armstrong fought Martin 5 times winning 2 losing to and having 1 draw.Johnson fought Martin twice beating him both times and knocking him out for several minutes in their second fight! You said Johnson had 10 known fights up to1898 I say he had 7 and I named them .Now you name the other 3! In1898 Armstrong was kod by Everett and Childs, Johnson beat them both!

I never said anything about that. You're so desperate for anything you mention deals that have nothing to do with what I said. I said pre 1899 Johnson had beaten no one. DUH. I am correct again. Get some rest.

In1898 Armstrong couldn't beat Fat Oaf Ed Dunkhorst ,and a year later he lost to him! BTW Armstrong beat Martin in Martin's debut fight Martin was 17 years old!and could only draw with him in their second fight for which Martin was 3-1-0 and just 18!.
