I have photos of Jeffries, walking back to his corner his chest smeared with blood, his eye closed, his nose swollen and broken ,rivulets of blood on his legs.He was as comprehensively beaten as any man can be and he took his licking with great courage and fortitude, he must have known after a couple of rounds he was in for a terrible hiding, yet he continued to come off his stool and do what he could until his body failed him. One idiot maintaining," the earth is flat ,"should not traduce that.
Everything I read or see about Jeffries tells me he was awful, just awful. Very strong, yes. Able to take terrible punishment, yes. But otherwise total crap. Virtually no boxing skills. Slow. Easy to hit. Etc. Surely most Hw's from Johnson to Wilder bust him up and Knock him out. Ok he beats Carnera, but that's all.
At the very least you're going to have kick out your appraisal past Johnson. All of their peers though the two directly comparable.
2-5 is about right, and my point was it ended much sooner than 15 rounds, with Louis out. But Louis was an active fighter. Jeffries had not fought in 6 years.
Did you read a word Johnson said??? Do you watch any film? When Jeffries tired, Johnson didn't play any games like he did with Burns or Ketchel.
Johnson did not fight anything like Louis and that is the whole crux of the matter, you could not find two more diametrically opposed styles if you went looking for them.Johnson was content to box off the back foot inviting his opponent to lead and countering him when he did.He seldom went for the ko and he did not possess Louis' explosive power .Until he aged Louis was always the aggressor, stalking his man behind his jab intent on a ko. Jeffries was ****ed after 6 rds his own corner wanted to pull him out! Johnson on the other hand was boxing well within himself and enjoying his," payback time," immensely. He had suffered Jeffries racial insults for several years, his refusal to give him a title chance, his refusal to shake hands when the contracts were signed and in the ring prior to the fight starting. He had endured being called a ****,a ******,a black skunk, a yellow picanniny and many other choice Jeffries epiphets he was in no hurry to end Jeffries painful humiliation and, in his place nor would I have been! " "How did you like that one Jim? Does it hurt? don't rush Jim, I can go on like this allnight! Where's your big punch Jim?" "Jack Johnson is the most wonderful fighter that ever pulled on a glove. He won as he pleased from Jeffries and was never in danger." " Jeffries could not hit Johnson and Johnson could hit Jeffries whenever he pleased." Tex Rickard ,promoter and referee of the fight. The New York Tribune July 5th 1910.
