This article popped up on my computer, news to me! Any thoughts? http://www.boxingnewsonline.net/did-jack-johnson-fight-jack-dempsey/
It would be a bit of a joke at this point. Johnson would not have the speed to keep him away, nor anything else. It might be interesting if Johnson lands a big uppercut which was his best punch. But that isn't enough against a rampaging Dempsey. Dempsey ko's him, and fast.
You can read the "fight report" here: https://news.google.com.au/newspapers?id=BONQAAAAIBAJ&sjid=9P8MAAAAIBAJ&pg=1844,3630691&hl=en Notice the editor's note at the end explaining that it's just an imaginary account of what might have happened if they'd ever met. There actually was quite a buzz about Johnson's comeback when he got out of jail in 1921. A showdown with Harry Wills was reported as being pretty much a done deal, and there were supposedly big offers floating around for Dempsey to defend against him. But his name was still so poisonous nothing ever came of it.
Well that clears that up, thanks for that. At least Johnson's trouncing of Firpo is true, as it is well documented.
Its very likely fake. There is NO WAY these two could get together in the same ring without the press or those are ring side talking about it. I would say this is something Johnson might do as he wasn't a champion and needed money.
I remember when there was serious debate on it. Klompton was doing fairly well debunking it but it was debateable both ways, and there looked like there was some good evidence suggesting it happened (from memory you were unearthing quite a few articles supporting it, including the actual fight report). I was just about to write a long winded post declaring how it must have happened based on the evidence when i stumbled across a second fight report which didnt delete the first (or was it last) paragraph that said something like this is made up fight report. Pretty funny really how one little ommission changed things, and also even funnier that even after that was posted, several people still continued to fight and argue that it STILL happened and that the article was a real report. If you read the report, purely from memory, it had Johnson starting the fight on his toes and relying on a left jab. Not really the way johnson fought.
Woops, was that one of the guys who refused to believe the fight report was fake? Only "very likely"???
One thing is for sure and that's that Johsin wouldn't have let anyone hear the end of it if he performed even mildly well.
