Hohnson doesnt need to hit Marciano hard enough to keep him off him. He would want marciano in close, so he can use his superior size, strength and clinching. This is a tough fight for both these guys, and i agree that the ref plays a huge role.

I am very versed in his pre-title career actually.

Please remind me who these talented, refined HEAVYWEIGHTS were. McVey was his best actual heavyweight pelt, a shrinking violet who looks like **** on the little film we have of him. A guy fighting stringbeans and battle royale contestants and still losing his share. An important historical figure, no doubt, but in comparative ability... please.

In counterpoint, is your contention that Johnson's greater accomplishments were pre-title and an admittance that Johnson was actually a better fighter before he hit the 200 pound mark? So perhaps he is a greater lightheavy than heavyweight? Because I would agree.

After losing to Jeannette on a controversial dsq, Johnson went unbeaten for 10 years, he then lost at the age of 37,to Willard, before going a further 11 years before beaing beaten at the age of 48 , seems he must have been doing something right?:huh

    SuzieQ,

Jeanette was a novice with a losing record who claims to have weighed in the 160 pound range when he last meet Johnson, meaning he could have been below 160 when they first meet. You do the math. Johnson had huge advantage in experience, and 15-20 pound edge.

Any all time great in his prime years should have trashed lighter novice, yet Johnson lost once and drew. As I said before, there is little to brag about here. The reverse is true.

Regarding the match, Jeffries was washed up, and visibly tired on flimed in round 14. He would not hold his hand up. This is when Johnson, who landed plenty of uppercuts and body shots went in for the kill vs a rusty and gassed older fighter who had not fought a round in 5 years.

When a champion in his prime meets an in-active washed up older champion, and it takes him 15 rounds to win, what does that tell you?

Don't deny that there were multiple reports posted here that clearly state Johnson fired multiple low blows. How is that controversial? Johnson deserved to be DQ'd, and should have lost his colored title belt, but did not.

    JOHNSON BEATS JEANETTE
Negro Champion, However, Was Disqualified on an Alleged Foul
    11/25/05-PHILADELPHIA LEDGER
After outclassing Joe Jeanette for a round and a half, Jack Johnson, The
Negro Heavyweight Champion of the World, lost the bout at the National
Athletic Club [Phila.] last night on an alleged foul.
Jeanette, after being thumped in lively fashion in the first round, assumed
a crouching pose in the secondround. He undertook to run in and clinch,
ducking a vicious right hand swing. Johnson ripped a right hand hook up for Jeanette's jaw. The latter dropped to the floor, writhing in apparent agony.
He claimed to have been struck a foul blow.
He was removed to the dressing room and the club physician substantiated
his claim. Johnson was promtly disqualified.

Here is a ringside report that clearly shows your assertations to be BULL****.
When you originally mentioned this fight a way back on another thread, you asserted that Johnson fouled out to save himself from a beating.

This report clearly states that Johnson held the upper hand during the brief fight, it also clearly states it was ONE punch ,NOT MULTIPLE BLOWS.

Stop with the same tired old lies, repeating them endlessly will not make them any more believable.

I love all this strength attributed to Johnson because he had a decent set of biceps ... throwing around small guys like Burns and Ketchel do not make him George Foreman .... Johnson was a very smart fighter and he was strong but if you watch he knew leverage almost like a wrestler and used it to pin guys arms ... I would not automatically say he was stronger than Marciano by any means ... from legs and trunk Rocky was a 220 pounder and he knew how to use it ... even thought Joe Louis was old when they fought he had been active and was well trained ( unlike Jeffries in Reno) and from the opening seconds of the fight Marciano giving up thirty pounds pushed him all over the place ... anyone that thinks Rocky would fight him like Jim Flynn, swinging wildly while held back with a palm on his head is dreaming ... Rocky would crack him in the elbow and break that arm in half ..

Isn't this what has happened with Jeffries?:huh Throwing guys around in sparring?
The difference is, we can see Johnson doing it in actual fights, is that not so?

Marciano had big legs, but his chest measurement was 38", not that of a 220 pounder by any means, mine was that when I left school, and I was under 168lbs.

ps Jeffries spent hours practicing wrestling with Frank Gotch and Farmer Burns ,leading up to the Reno fight.
