(Philadelphia)by defeating Joe Janette, of New York, and Walter Johnson, late of Boston. in three rounds each.Janette lasted the full three rounds and while he made quite a good showing at times carried the big crowd with him by rushing Johnson, yet it was easily seen that Johnson was his master as a boxer. Johnson towered over the New York man as they shook hands and he appeared to be cosiderably heavier than Janette. Janette was well coached to keep close to Johnson and by so doing the big fellow could not use his great long arms to such a good advantage. Johnson alternated his attack from face to body, using his left more than his right. Johnson tried two or three times for a right hand punch to the jaw in the first round, but could not connect. In one of Johnson's rushes Jenette went down.. Janette landed several blows, one right-hander making Johnson blink. Janette started the second round with a rush. There was a hot mix which ended in a clinch. Then Johnson landed three left-handed blows to the stomach in quick succession. Janette stood up gamely and landed several hard blows. Philadelphia Inquirer didn't report on May 15, 1905 show, even though it advertised that show the previous day. It didn't report on 1905-11-25 and 1905-12-02 shows either. 1905-05-10 Philadelphia Inquirer. BOXED TWO MEN --- Jack Johnson Caught Tartar in One, But a Mark in the Other The double stunt tried by Jack Johnson, colored heavy-weight champion of the world, in meeting two men for three rounds each in the wind-up at the Knickerbocker Athletic Club last night proved to be more of a surprise than the champion was looking for. Joe Jeanette, of New York, went on first, and although greatly handicapped in weight and height and eclipsed in experience, he gave Johnson as hard a three-round reception that the latter has run accross while in this city. Jeanette not only held his own, but actually forced the milling in two of the rounds. He repeatedly got home to Johnson's body and face with a good left jab and landed a few right-hand wallops which caused the crowd to yell its approval. Jeanette was not any too gallus, however, by his success and he invariably cleverly covered up whenever the big fellow came rushing in after being stung by some of Joe's punches. Johnson seemed unable to get to Jeanette with any of his blows effectively, although the New Yorker took the count more than once to gather his wits about him when the milling got a bit warm. Johnson did not seem to try very hard in the first round, but after Jeanette had made himself solid with the crowd Johnson sailed in for the second round like a hurricane. For a time things went badly for Joe, but before the round was over he was giving just as good as he received. The third he easily held his own, despite Johnson's desperate efforts to land the "ender" punch. The crowd went wild when the bell ended the bout with Jeanette fighting Johnson savagely. 1906-09-21 Philadelphia Inquirer. JOHNSON SHADES JANETTE. --- Big Jack Caught Tough Customer in New Yorker Through his clever covering up and ability to stand punishment enabled Joe Janette, of New York, to almost even up matters with Jack Johnson at the Broadway A. C. last night. Janette advanced to Jack in the first and was met by a hard right to the heart. He retaliated by landing on Johnson's head. Johnson played for the heart and body continously. In the second Joe opened up an ugly cut over Jack's eye and this flow of gore rather blinded Johnson. Neither contestant was in apparent danger during the bout. Janette clinched to evade in the third. Johnson's close-range work was good and landed on Jack's jaw in the rush. The last round was a continuation of clinches with neither man able to do any damage. Johnson had a shade.
Wow, so he went even with someone he easily outweighed, had a ton of experience over and ducked for 7 years as a champion.
BIG DEE HERE= The thing your not telling about the first encounter between Jack Johnson and Joe Jeanette is Johnson was in his 12th yr as a pro fighter and his 56th bout and Joe Jeanette was a pro for 7mos. and his 3rd bout as a pro. Kinda one sided don`t you think brainiac.
No chris, Johnson beat Jeanette 5 out of 6 times, with the only loss being disqualification. johnson whupped his butt pretty good
This is how I see it.A This content is protected Jeanette held his own with a prime version of Jack Johnson.
held his own? did you not read the articles that showed jack johnson clearly beat joe jeanette every time?
I have a question for mendoza aka dr. Z, in late 1906 Jack Johnson BEAT joe jeanette in a 6 round bout. That was jeanettes 20th pro bout, and jeanette was coming off a knockout win over sam langford. do you still believe jeanette was grassy green? take note jeanette had 6 more bouts when he lost to johnson, than witherspoon did when he lost(or should i say beat) to holmes
Did you read what Seyna posted? In the DQ match, Jeanette was hammering Johnson until the low blow foul. My points are thus. Jeanette had no amateur career at all. He had about a .500 record, and less than 10 fights....yet he lasted the distance in all the fights, and had his share of moments vs a prime Johnson in 1905-1906. It makes one wonder what a more experienced Jeanette would do.
